Nancy J. (Maddox) Steed was born on June 5, 1936, in Sedalia, MO to Dr. Albert R. Maddox and Olive Cox-Maddox, she departed life on March 4, 2025, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law, Stuart M. Conklin, as well as her daughter, Rhonda M. Conklin.
She is survived by her husband, Lemuel "Mike" Steed, and grandsons, Kristopher and Justin Conklin. She is also survived by her great granddaughter, Zya; and stepdaughter, Tracy Gierzak, and her family; as well as many relatives and friends.
Nancy was raised in Sedalia, where she graduated from C.C. Hubbard High School in Sedalia and later attended Howard University in Washington D.C., before returning to Sedalia where she was blessed with the birth of her daughter, Rhonda Marie Caldwell, from a short marriage. She and her daughter shortly moved to San Francisco, CA soon after, where she met her husband of 46 years, Lemuel "Mike" Steed. After their years in California, they returned to Missouri where she was employed nearly 20 years at Blue Cross Blue Shield, and worked as a Supervisor of Claims, in her department.
Nancy loved to travel after retirement, she and her husband Mike traveled in their RV for 25 years and would still be traveling today if they could. She was a founding member of the MO/KAN Roadrunners and Covered Wagons RV Club, where she fostered several incredible, life-long friendships. When she wasn't traveling, she loved to spend her time landscaping, woodworking, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs. She will be remembered for her radiant personality and her unwavering devotion to the people she loved.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday March 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Watkins Heritage Chapel 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. KCMO 64130. Interment: Sedalia Cemetery in Sedalia, MO. Visitation: 10-11:00 a.m. at the Chapel. For further information call Watkins Heritage Chapel at 816-861-3030. Arrangements entrusted to Watkins Heritage Chapel.
