Nancy Stickrod Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tippecanoe Funeral & Cremation Services from Nov. 13 to Nov. 27, 2025.
Nancy Ann (Adkins) Stickrod , 79, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2025, surrounded by love. Born on May 27, 1946, in Huntington, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Laura Marie (Church) Dennison and Howard Adkins.
Nancy was married to Thomas J. Stickrod and they just recently celebrated 51 years of marriage, together they built a beautiful, blended family that became the center of her world. Between them, they raised five children - two hers and three his - but in their home, there was never such a thing as "step." Every child belonged, every heart was included, and the love they shared was real because she made it that way. They were also longtime members of Gathering Point Church in Dayton IN formerly Dayton United Methodist Church and Englewood Methodist Church in Englewood Florida.
Nancy was a woman who loved deeply and lived with a joyful, no-nonsense spirit. She adored her children and absolutely doted on her grandchildren - even if the rules weren't quite the same for the two groups. Her children fondly remember that eating in the living room was off-limits - except on Sundays, when popcorn was allowed during family time. But when the grandkids came along, all bets were off; they could eat whatever they wanted, wherever they wanted. "She let them get away with everything," her kids say with a laugh - and love every memory of it.
Nancy had a gift for making ordinary moments special. She loved her friends in her card club - though everyone agreed they did far more talking and laughing than actual card-playing. She was an amazing cook, known especially for her legendary beef and noodles and her homemade egg rolls that no one could quite replicate.
Once her children were in school, Nancy worked at Decker's in downtown Lafayette, where she appreciated an employer that understood what mattered most to her - being a mom. She always made sure she had summers off so she could spend every moment possible with her family. Later in life, she and Tom became snowbirds, spending winters basking in the sunshine and sand. Nothing made her happier than sitting by the beach, starting the day with her favorite crab omelet, and soaking in the warmth of it all.
Nancy also loved a good shopping trip - especially to TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Her daughters laugh remembering how she'd come home with bags full of things she didn't need… only to return half of them the following week. She was funny, charming, and always a hoot to be around.
Even in her final days, Nancy was thinking of others. Just days before her passing, she had Jacqueline make a special trip to the store to buy cookie dough so there would be some ready when Marc came to visit - a simple gesture that says everything about who she was: always caring, always giving, always putting others first.
She is survived by her loving children: Jacqueline Brown (Jason) of Delphi, IN; Marc Plybon (Bethany) of Lafayette; Ruth Gibson (Tony) of Lafayette, IN; Patricia Chismar of Burlington, KS; Dwight Stickrod (Michelle) of Chicago, IL; and her cherished grandchildren: Kassandra Nicol (Erik), Levi Rhymer (Morgan Beard), Kaitlin Plybon, Hayley Powell (Mitchell), Brett Stickrod (Andy McKernan), Kelly Phillips (Meredith Phillips), Matthew Stickrod (Kaitlyn), Shelby Posey (Josh), Reid Rech, Aubrey Rech, Ashley Butcher, Cody Butcher (Tiffany Warf), Devin Gibson (Tyana Taylor), Levi Brown, and Katie Brown; her adored 19 great grandchildren; her sister, Judy Mills of Goodlettsville, TN; special nephew David Mills of Columbia TN, and a special niece Cheryl Mills of Goodlettsville TN, as well as many others.
She was preceded in death by her parents Laura and Howard; her first husband, Jack R. Plybon; her sister, Patricia Lou Crabtree; and her grandson-in-law, Joshua Morgan.
Nancy loved sunflowers, Days of Our Lives, her card club, her family, and the simple joys that filled her home with laughter. She will be remembered for her fierce love, her humor, her generosity, and the family she built - one that continues to shine with the same warmth she brought to everyone she knew.
Her children say that if you sit in a room with their family today, you can feel the love she taught them - a love that knows no "step," no boundary, and no condition. She was simply Mom to them all. And that, above all else, is her greatest legacy.
