She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at Eastern Michigan University in 1953.
Nell met the love of her life, David Lockhart at Central Michigan University and they were married in 1951. They were married 63 years, until David's death in 2014. Together they had 2 children, Lee Alan and Lynn Ann. Nell taught elementary education for many years at Southgate Schools.
They moved to Southgate, Michigan in 1955 and lived there until retirement. Nell especially loved the cottage they built together on the Betsie River. She made intricate cross stitch works of art including London and Sydney, Australia. Nell was an accomplished bridge player all her life and enjoyed playing Mahjong and teaching others to play at her last residence at Vista Grande Villa. She was a valued member of the Friends of the Library in Elk Rapids, Michigan and served as the treasurer for many years.
