DURHAM – Nellie Rose Painter, 96, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. She was born to Preston Rose and Willie McCall Rose in Selma, NC, and was the youngest of seven siblings, all of whom predeceased her. Nellie was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl C. Painter, and her stepsons Cyrus and Keith.
Nellie is survived by her daughters Elaine Garner (Rodney) and Ellen Harris (Chad) and daughter-in-law Nancy Painter; grandchildren Ryan Garner (Heidi), Megan Francis (Justin), Carlea Best (Mark), Jessica Hardy (Ben), and Grant Harris (Megan); and her great-grandchildren Vivian, Nathan, Caleigh, Cora, Rosalie, Logan, Spencer, and Evelyn.
She was devoted to her church, friends and family, traveling with her husband, and spending time with those she loved. Born with a spirit of kindness and resilient strength, Nellie lived a life defined by hard work with the State of North Carolina, from which she retired after 30 years of service. She enjoyed volunteering in many ways at church, including singing in the choir. Her home was always a place of welcome, warmth, and laughter where memories were made and stories were cherished.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, August 30 at McMannen United Methodist Church. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 11:00 to 12:00 pm in the fellowship hall. Burial will follow the services at 2:30 pm in Selma Memorial Gardens, Selma, NC.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to McMannen United Methodist Church 4102 Neal Rd, Durham, NC 27705.
