Nellie Mae Sample Smith, a beacon of love and strength for all who knew her, passed away peacefully at the age of 88, on the 4th of August, 2025, in Nassawadox Rehabilitation and Nursing in Nassawadox, Virginia. She was born on May 15, 1937, to the late Upshur Smith and Sally Harmon Smith and raised in the humble town of Birdsnest, Virginia, where she embodied the warmth and resilience of her community.
Nellie dedicated her life to hard work, compassion, and unwavering faith. A lifelong resident of Northampton County, she worked diligently on several local farms, including Sanders Brothers, Robert Gladden, Walker Farm, and Carpenter's Farm. Her strong work ethic and deep-rooted sense of community were evident in everything she did.
Later in life, Nellie followed her true calling-caring for others. She became a devoted caregiver and a loving foster mother, offering comfort, support, and a safe haven to those in need. Her nurturing spirit touched countless lives, and her home was always open to anyone who needed kindness and love.
Nellie had an adventurous side, too. She loved to ride, and if you were on the highways of Northampton County, you were likely to see her out and about with her dear friend Helen Goffigon, her cousin and Virginia Collins traveling the highways more than you'd see a USPS truck on the road. Their joyful journeys were a testament to her love of life and companionship.
Above all, Nellie's deepest devotion was to her faith. She was a faithful and active member of Miracle Temple of Faith, where she worshipped wholeheartedly until her health began to decline. Her soft-spoken nature, warm smile, and gentle spirit made her beloved by all who knew her. She touched many hearts and leaves behind a legacy of grace, kindness, and unwavering love.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, Upshur and Sally Smith; her brother, Upshur Smith, Jr.; her son, James Smith; and her grandson, Carlton Smith.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving daughter, Barbara West (John) of Exmore, VA; four de-voted sons, Johnny Sample (Willette) of Eastville, VA, Walt Sample (Susie) of Princess Anne, MD, George Sample (Annette) of Newport News, VA, and Charles Sample (Veronica) of Painter, VA; one cherished stepdaughter, Gladys Stevenson (Richard) of Richmond Hill, NY; daughter-in-law, Ernestine Smith; one nephew, Upshur Smith, Jr. II; two nieces, Stephanie Landers and Tricia Smith; eighteen grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, great, great-grandchildren, extended relatives, and friends.
Nellie will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her kind heart, enduring faith, and the love she so freely gave to everyone around her. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Nellie Mae Sample (Smith), please visit our Tree Store.
