WINSTED – Nicholas Onion, 36, beloved son of Bernadette Bray and Joseph Onion, Jr., and his wife Stacey Onion passed away peacefully on July 6, 2023 at home due to health complications. He was a lifelong resident of Winsted. Nicholas attended Winsted schools, graduated from Gilbert High School, and received an Associate degree from Northwestern Connecticut Community College.
Nick will forever be loved by those who knew him and remembered fondly for his loving heart and humorous nature. He was kind, gentle and patient. He overcame many health problems during his all too brief time here; all who loved him were so proud of his perseverance in the face of adversity. The best word to describe Nick would be "kind." He was the type of person many aspire to become.
Nick loved animals and the great outdoors. His greatest enjoyment came from caring for his beloved pug dogs who adored him. As an avid lifelong fisherman, he loved spending time on the water with his family and friends. Besides fishing, Nick also had a lifelong passion of collecting antique fishing tackle that he shared with his father. They travelled the country to shows and conventions in the pursuit of historical fishing items. Nick was a proud member of the NFLCC (National Fishing Lure Collector's Club).
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his siblings, Joseph Onion, III and wife Jennifer, Marit Erne and husband Daniel, Nicole Suter and husband Peter and Jamie Rubenstein; grandparents, Joseph Onion, Sr., and Karen Onion; aunts and uncles, Valerie and David Chisholm, Julie and Paul Halfpenny, Andy Bray and Gerard Bray; nieces, Ella Onion and Heidi Erne; cousins, Emma Chisholm, Fred Chisholm, Jennifer Bray, Christopher Bray, Clara Halfpenny, Caleb Halfpenny and Grace Halfpenny; as well as Otis, Bella, Gordy and Chickaletta and all his beloved pugs. He was predeceased by grandparents, Vernon and Margaret Bray and cousin, Jewel Halfpenny.
Friends may call on Friday, July 14, 2023 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 6 – 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Winchester Center Congregational Church in Winchester Center at 11 AM with the Rev. Jacquelyn Hall officiating. We never see a pug and not think of you. You were The Pug Whisperer. A gentle soul that is thought of often. God Bless your loving mother and family. We will never forget the kind, caring Nick.
