Norma Jean Boren, age 92, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on December 5, 2025 at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Norma Jean was a resident of
Brownsburg, Indiana, and a former longtime resident of Brown County, Indiana.
Born on April 5, 1933, in
Council Bluffs, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Norman G. and Agnes (Oliver) Scarvie. She was a 1951 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in
Council Bluffs, Iowa. Norma Jean went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Education and History from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1960. She retired in 1973 from the Iowa School for the Deaf, where she worked as a teacher. After that, she held the same position at the Indiana School for the Deaf for several years. After finally retiring from education, Norma Jean worked as an Advertising Representative for the Martinsville Reporter newspaper, officially retiring in 1983.
Norma Jean was a devoted member of Cottonwood Christian Church in Brown County beginning in 1996, where she sang in the choir and served as a Sunday School teacher. Her other memberships included the Retired Teachers Association of Brown County, P.E.O. Sisterhood, and Bible Study Fellowship in Bloomington. She was an animal lover who raised goats and horses and cherished her dog, Katie. She also enjoyed drawing and writing, and above all, faithfully serving the Lord.
In addition to her parents, Norma Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, William E. "Bill" Boren, who passed away on May 26, 2021. They were married on June 10, 1978, in Martinsville. She was also preceded in death by her step-son, Joe Boren and daughter-in-law, Sherri Boren.
She is survived by her children and step-children: Brenda Cole of Speedway; Laura (Danny) Groninger of Plainfield; Nancy (Tom) Glatt of
Anthem, AZ; Sharon Brady of Brownsburg, William "Eddie" (Kris) Boren Jr. of Cleremont; and Karen Boren of
Milford, OH; her brother, Oliver Scarvie of Medford, Oregon; her foster daughter, Cathy (Richard) Stevens of Martinsville; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rev. Darrel Miller will conduct a funeral service at 12 p.m. on Thursday, December 18th at Cottonwood Christian Church, 2523 Cottonwood Road in Brown County. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church. Burial will follow at Lanam Ridge Cemetery in Brown County. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
