Norma R. R. Mayer

Norma R. Mayer, 83, of Evansville, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 19, 1941, in Evansville to the late Alexander and Marie (Hillenbrand) Scheller.

Norma graduated from Central High School in the Class of 1961 and was a longtime member of St. Benedict Cathedral. She worked as a dietary cook at Deaconess Hospital for over 30 years.

Norma lived with dementia for more than 10 years and after the passing of her beloved husband, was cared for at home by Keith, Melissa, Kelsey, and Kyleigh Mayer. She found joy in simple pleasures-flowers, snowmen, angels, cooking, yard sales, cross-stitching, and ceramics. Above all, she loved taking care of her children and grandchildren. Norma cherished a full house and the sound of laughter, always welcoming friends and family into her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Donald R. Mayer; her siblings, Robert Scheller, Alexander Scheller, Rita Jackson, Lawrence Scheller, and Dale Scheller.

Norma is survived by her sons, Donald A. (Cheryl) Mayer of Evansville, Dale P. (Debbie) Mayer of Evansville, Kevin J. (Sherri) Mayer of Henderson, KY, David C. (Amber) Mayer of Geneseo, IL, and Keith R. (Melissa) Mayer of Evansville; her brother, Norman Scheller of Evansville; her sister, Shirley Linnebur of Byers, CO; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, with a memorial service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict Cathedral, 1328 Lincoln Ave., Evansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m., with Fr. Theodore Tempel officiating. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dementia Caregiving Made Easier, a support community for those caring for loved ones with dementia.
