WINTHROP- Norman Richard Perrin, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the Alfond Center for Health.
Norman was born March 7, 1934, in Westbrook, Maine. He is the son of the late Eugene and Rose (Caron) Perrin. He grew up in Westbrook, Maine.
Norman Enlisted in the United States Airforce in 1953. He received his GED while in the US Air Force. He had been stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama serving the rank of Airman First Class as an Air Operations Specialist during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged from active service in April of 1957 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Norman also served with the United States Airforce Reserve until 1961.
After the Air Force, Norman continued on with his education by completing a 3-year course in Art Education at the Maine College of Applied Arts of the Portland Society of Art (now known as The Maine College of Art) in 1961. Norman then received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Maine in 1962. After getting married to Gerry in 1968, he then went on to receive his Master's degree in Education in 1972.
Norman worked for the State of Maine in the Bureau of Rehabilitation. Norman became assigned to the Governor Baxter State School for the Deaf on Mackworth Island in Falmouth, Maine. He worked as a counselor and sign language interpreter. He later retired from the state as the Director for the Division of Deafness in Augusta. In his earlier years, he worked as a Police Officer during summers in Ogunquit, then taught Art at Yarmouth Schools.
Norman was a talented painter and sketcher in his early years. When he was living in Westbrook, he would play hockey at Riverside Skating Rink, The Beaver Pond, and the open skating rink on Lincoln Street by the Presumpscot River and the Dana Warp Mill. He also played Tennis. Late in life, he enjoyed playing the acoustic and bass guitar as well as keyboard and was in many local bands including New Disciples, Swing Time Band and did some music with Lil's kitchen. He was a former longtime member of the Gardiner Nazarene Church.
Norman is survived by his son Christopher N. Perrin and his daughter Sharida Perrin.
In addition to his mother and father Norman is predeceased by his brother Paul Perrin and sister Patricia Perrin.
Norman's Visitation will be on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM in the Gardiner Nazarene Church, 6 Nazarene Way, Gardiner, Maine. His Funeral Service will be in the Church immediately following visitation beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland, Maine. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
