Nyla was born in Ravinia, SD on September 16, 1940 to Nyle and Florence (Deuschle) Martin and was raised on the family farm near Wagner, SD. She graduated from Wagner High School and graduated from Southern State College with a teaching degree. She taught elementary school in Delmont, Wagner, and Columbia, SD. She met her husband Robert when she went to Peavy Lumber in Columbia to purchase bricks and boards to make a bookshelf for her schoolroom. They married November 22, 1962 and went on to have 5 children. They moved 4 times and the first 3 were on the same block!
Nyla devoted her life to raising her children. Her greatest joy were her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they made together. In 1997, she welcomed into the family, a bonus son and his family; Marla's natural brother.
