Richard Wayne Croff Sr., passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024 at his home in Gladwin, Michigan following an unexpected change to ongoing health conditions. Known to almost all as "Rick" or "Papa," he was a cherished friend, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Richard was born on July 28, 1944, in Wayne, Michigan, to the late Milo and Dorothy (Schorbt) Croff and preceded in death by brothers Jim Griffis and Gary Griffis. Surviving him is his sister, Linda (Arthur) Spinella, wife, Donna Croff, children, Richard Croff Jr, Norman (Cheryl) Croff, William Croff, Dawn Croff, Danniele (Dustin) Derr, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Rick's journey through life was marked by unwavering devotion to his family, passion for riding his motorcycle, dedication to community service, and a love for competition and the great outdoors. The quality moments with him were filled with outrageous "Super Rick" stories, jokes and humor of all variations, a pocket full of treats for any dog he would meet, and world changing advice. Rick gave you a contagious feeling of everything good whenever he was around and if you were lucky enough a big "Yarrrtt" when he was leaving.
On September 16, 1972, Rick married the love of his life, the former Donna Szarzi, in Livonia, Michigan. At the time, he was already the father to Richard "Ricky," Norman "Rocky," and William "Billy". Rick and Donna shared 51 loving years of marriage. Together they raised their daughter Dawn alongside Billy's daughter Danniele, filling their home with joy and laughter. The family grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each bringing immense joy and pride to their Papa's life. Once retiring from Livonia Powertrain in 1998, Rick, Donna, and Danniele moved to their dream home "up north" in Gladwin.
No matter where Rick was, his most joyful moments were found riding motorcycles and being Papa. His Honda brought him freedom and adventure whether it was a day-long poker run with his favorite riding buddy Danniele (granddaughter) or a week-long Sturgis trip with Gary (brother) and their closest friends. Papa loved and cherished all of his grandchildren, blessing Deanna and Emma (daughters of Danniele) with a special bond. As much happiness as they brought to his life, he managed to provide so much more to them. The title of "Papa" may have been given to Rick by his grandchildren, but it was carried through in who he was and the endless amount of lives he touched.
During his retirement years, Rick found real meaning within the community. His participation in bowling, horseshoes, and golf gave years of his companionship to numerous people. His favorite testament to skill and sportsmanship was winning first in the state championship horseshoe competition. Rick took great pleasure volunteering for Meals on Wheels, 4-H, Butman Township Fire Department, and the Community Emergency Response Team. The Gladwin Church of Christ became a valued place of nourishment for his relationship with God. Rick's love for hunting, fishing, feeding the deer, and his tractor were well-known, as these activities allowed him to connect with nature and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
Those who knew Rick would describe him as kind, funny, thoughtful, and selfless. His unfaltering love and forgiveness will never be forgotten. His actions spoke louder than words, and he consistently put the needs of others before his own. Rick's presence was a source of happiness, comfort, and strength, and his ability to listen and offer wise counsel created a foundation for family and friends to build upon, continuing his legacy of love and kinship.
Rest in peace, Papa Rick. Your life was a beacon of kindness, generosity, and laughter, and your joyful presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing you.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Gladwin Church of Christ with Pastor Tony Reynolds presiding. Burial in Gladwin city's Highland Cemetery to follow. Visitations for family and friends will be held Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home - Gladwin Chapel and Wednesday at the Church of Christ from 10:00 am until time of services.
