Olden Abney was born on June 15, 1952, in Saluda, South Carolina, to the late Joe
Bonham and Georgia Abney. On October 4, 2025, Olden peacefully walked through
Heaven's gates, where God was waiting for him. "A son was called home."
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughters Tamiko (Shawn) Jerome, Theresa
Strickland, and Jennifer Brice-Elliot; his son-in-law Ian Butts; his brothers Freddy,
Rick Joe, and Butchie.
Olden was raised in Saluda, SC, where he worked in construction alongside his
father. At the age of 16, he moved with his family to Washington, D.C., where he
attended Western High School and met his late wife, Gloria Abney. During his early
years, he also proudly served in the United States Army.
In the early 1980s, Olden's spiritual journey began when he became a member of St.
Phillips Pentecostal Church, where God became a guiding force in his life. In 1986,
he earned his GED and continued his education at the University of the District of
Columbia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, an Associate of Arts, and
an Associate of Science.
Affectionately known as "Aba Dab" to many, Olden lived a vibrant life - from the
streets of 14th Street NW to becoming a Bishop in God's house. He was known for
his wisdom, his strength, and his infectious love for people. He made everyone feel
like family, no matter where they came from.
Olden had many passions. He was an avid chess player and a lover of tennis - never
missing a match on TV. A loyal sports fan, he cheered on the Miami Heat before
becoming a dedicated Kevin Durant fan. He supported all things Washington sports,
especially the Redskins/Commanders. Above all, he cherished time with his family
and adored his grandchildren - especially his granddaughters.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His one and only son Donnell Abney; His
daughter Tjamanquie (Precious) Moody; His daughter-in-law Janet Durham-Abney;
Grandchildren: Pamela, Donia, Donese, Donnell, Katina, Greg, Dajuan ("Day Day"),
Elijah, Miracle, Terry, Enoch, and Jahquie; Nine great-grandchildren; His sister
Yolanda Coleman; His aunt Bishop Dr. Gene Lawrence-Stewart; Nieces: Kiesha and
Latoya; Nephews: Freddie ("Man") and Michael; Special goddaughter Tania; Ex
wife Vicky; Close friends Monica ("Doodie") and Rochelle; And a host of cousins,
extended family, and lifelong friends.
Olden Abney will be remembered for his unwavering faith, deep love for family, and
the light he brought into the lives of all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the
many lives he touched.
