Ophelia Black Couts, age 91, of Springfield, passed from this life on Wednesday June 4, 2025, at White House Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday June 8th at 2:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home, with her grandson, Pastor Joshua Couts, officiating. Interment will follow in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Franklin, KY. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 noon until service time at the Robertson County Funeral Home.
Ms. Ophelia was born January 14, 1934, in Portland, TN to the late Herschel E. and Minnie Bell Scott Black. She was a graduate of East Robertson High School Class of 1952, and was a lifelong member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Cross Plains, where she taught Sunday School for many years and was an avid supporter and worker in the Stone Soup ministry of the church. Ms. Ophelia retired from the Robertson County University of Tennessee Extension Office, where she served as an administrative assistant. She loved crafts, cooking, and was an excellent seamstress. Ms. Ophelia was known for her sourdough bread, of which she shared her starter with many family and friends across the years. She was always one that enjoyed doing for others, and she loved making book bags for the Robertson County Head Start program. Throughout her life, she was an avid reader, especially her Bible each and every day.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Robert L. Couts, Sr., by her siblings: Mary Pat Roberts, Ella Mae Black, Lloyd, Charles, Hobert, James, and Donovan Black, and by her great grandchild: Robert Dale Broadrick. Ms. Ophelia is survived by her children: Susan Couts Murphey of Cross Plains, Cheryl Couts Broadrick (Dale) of White House, Robert L. "Bobby" Couts, Jr. (Karen) of Cross Plains, Linda Couts Gaines (Bobby) of Goodlettsville, and Tommy (Lynn) Couts of Cross Plains, by her grandchildren: Justin Couts (Emily), Joshua Couts (Patricia), Jordan Osborne (Derek), Stephanie Couts Bradley (Howard), Lauren Gaines, Trey Gaines, Wyatt Couts, Sarah Wood (Jared), Cody Hulsizer, and Tyler Broadrick (Carla), by her fourteen great grandchildren, and by her sister: Clarise Lehman of Portland.
Pallbearers will be Justin Couts, Easton Couts, Wyatt Couts, Trey Gaines, J.R. Couts, and Jerry Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Will Ed Osborne, Paul Hart, Bob Ary, and Tom Jones.
The family would like to thank the staff of Morningside in Springfield for their love and care of Mrs. Ophelia.
