Oscar Rolando Cruz passed away early morning on April 11th, 2023 due to pulmonary fibrosis. Oscar spent the last month fighting for every breath he took, surrounded by his loving wife, Carmen, and his three kids, Oscar, Ashley, and Kevin. However, we do not want to remember Oscar the way he was during that last month. Rather, we want to remember him as the selfless father, loving husband, funniest friend, hardest worker, and man of God that he was.
Oscar was born and raised in Honduras, where he eventually crossed paths with Carmen. It was not long before the two planned a future together, got married, and started a family. Eventually, Oscar, Carmen, and Oscar Jr. immigrated to the United States. By 2003, Ashley and Kevin joined the mix, too. Oscar was an amazing father to all three kids. He so willingly gave everything he had to his children and his wife, even if it meant he had nothing left for himself. His main goal in life was to make sure his family was taken care of in every way possible. He was a present and supportive father and husband. The words, "We can't do it", never came out of his mouth. It was always, "We'll find a way to make it work." In his eyes, nothing was impossible.
Each person in his family had a different dynamic with him-each special and unique. Carmen was Oscar's rock and emotional support through thick and thin. She was the love of his life, his soulmate, and the person who kept him grounded. She was with him from their 20s up until his very last breath. Oscar Jr. was his confidant and at times, shared the role of being head of the household. He got to enjoy Oscar's earlier years with him, and it was through him that Oscar learned to navigate what it meant to be a father. Ashley was his princess and a light in his life that was entirely different from that of the boys (between you and me, she was probably his favorite). Kevin was his best friend. They bickered, joked, and laughed in almost every conversation. They spent a lot of time together doing everyday tasks and simply enjoying each other's company.
Aside from being with his family, Oscar worked harder than anyone and enjoyed it. He built many houses and buildings in his lifetime. He loved being given the opportunity to take on a new project and bring his visions to life. It didn't matter how cold or hot it was. It didn't matter if he was sick or tired. Oscar was always up and ready to work from sunrise to sunset. Given the chance, he may have never retired.
On Friday and Saturday, you could find Oscar sitting next to a giant speaker and blaring 80's rock. He loved The Police, The Eagles, Guns N' Roses, The Rolling Stones, and so many others. On Sunday, Oscar was at church. He rejoiced in the Word of God. He always talked about how refreshed he felt after a service. It was something he and Carmen looked forward to attending every Sunday.
Oscar will always be remembered as someone who was full of life. He was always dancing and laughing and though his life was cut short, he lived every day to the fullest and would want all of us to continue to do the same while remembering that he is there watching us enjoy it every step of the way.
