Owen Peter McKenney Jr.

DOVER, NH – Owen (Pete) Peter McKenney, Jr, 63, of Dover, passed away on October 8, 2024, surrounded by family.
The son of Owen and Jackie (Labonte) McKenney, Pete was born on September 26, 1961, in Dover, NH where he was a lifelong resident.
Pete was a 1979 graduate of Dover High School where he was a four-year multisport athlete. After a year playing prep school baseball at Bridgton Academy, he continued to the University of New Hampshire, where he was a proud member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. If you wanted to get Pete laughing, you just had to ask about his years he spent with his Kappa Sig brothers before graduating in 1984.
Over the years, Pete worked in sales for different companies, most recently with BN Yanow. His success in electrical sales was instrumental in supporting his passion for golf which he played as often as possible. Rain or shine, no tee time was too early. You could find him on courses throughout New England, especially Rochester Country Club, where he was a member for many years.
He was active in sports throughout his life, whether playing, coaching or refereeing. He coached youth softball and basketball, and high school baseball. He was a basketball referee for 40 years with an uncanny ability to tune out hecklers in the stands. He was amused by them most of the time. Pete was honored with the John R. Clark Officials Award in 2021, a prestigious recognition of his contribution as a high school sports official in the state of New Hampshire.
It would be an understatement to say Pete McKenney loved sports.
He loved his family and friends, and above all else, his daughters and very special granddaughter, Lily, who had her Pepere wrapped around her finger.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Owen & Jackie McKenney.
He will be greatly missed by those who survive him, including his three daughters, Taylor, Spencer and Reegan McKenney all of Dover, NH; his granddaughter, Lily of Dover, NH; one sister, Kathy Barbone and husband Joseph of Atkinson, NH; three brothers, Michael McKenney and wife Valerie of Barrington, NH, David McKenney of Dover, NH and James McKenney and wife Darcy of Rochester, NH, and his many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024, from 4-7pm at Purdy Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave, Dover, NH.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 10am at St. Mary Church, 25 Chestnut St, Dover NH
