Owen M. Spears, age 50, formerly of Broken Bow, died on August 1, 2025, at the Great Plains Health Center in North Platte.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. A visitation will be held at Govier Brothers on Thursday, August 7, from 9 AM to 7 PM, with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 PM. Memorial donations can be made to the family to assist with funeral and medical costs. Words of encouragement and remembrance can be left at www.govierbrothers.com
Owen Michael Spears was born on January 17, 1975, in Bellevue, NE. He graduated from Bowie High School (Maryland) in 1992 and then attended the University of Maryland, College Park, to study French and art history. Afterwards, he worked at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., for a number of years. Owen met Victoria Howell, his future wife, online, and the couple married in Las Vegas, NV, on August 18, 2007. They first lived in Spokane, WA, where Owen continued his college studies, before moving to Nebraska. They made their home in Broken Bow, raising their two children, Alissa and Ben, while Owen worked for BD.
Owen enjoyed riding and racing bicycles, his cats, and traveling. He also had wide interests in music, art history, literature, and languages.
Owen is survived by his wife, Victoria; his children, Alissa and Benjamin Spears; a brother, Tim (Lauren) Spears; two sisters, Ruthe (Stephen) Wagner and Lisa (Brad) Burks; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Owen was also survived by his father-in-law, Gene Howell; brother-in-law, Adam Howell; and sisters-in-law, Amber Howell and Stefanie Craig.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Angelika Spears, grandparents, mother-in-law Carol Howell, and brother-in-law Shane Craig.
