Despite being born with mild cerebral palsy and aphasia, she was able to overcome many problems. At age 6, her parents made the difficult decision to send her to live 120 miles from home for 2 years to learn to speak at the Institute of Logopedics (Heartspring). Returning home, she was able to begin school at her appropriate age and grade level. She had an amazing ability to memorize, and was able to graduate from Chanute High School and Neosho County Jr. College.
As a child she made the decision to trust Jesus Christ as her Savior and his once-only sacrifice as payment for her sin. Later she was baptized, showing her new life and choice to follow Christ. He was her source of joy and her help in difficult times. Her mother encouraged her to memorize scripture and sing, developing her love for the Lord. Even in recent years, she frequently reviewed the Bible verses she had learned years ago.
Patricia loved to sing and enjoyed participating in the church choir and bell choir. She was active in the Adult Special Needs Class at First Evangelical Church in Wichita, KS. She participated in daytime activities at Arrowhead West, and took part in the Special Olympics in various sports like bowling and swimming. She also loved to bake and cook, and she would frequently share her goodies with friends and family, including her housemates at Arrowhead.
Patricia is joining her parents, Melvin and Leota Owen; and brother-in-law, Charles “Ed” Gray, Jr, in heaven. She is leaving behind on Earth, sisters Kathryn Gray, and Becky (John) Rapp; brother, Jonathan (Patty) Owen; nieces and nephews, Jennifer (John) Brannon, Michael (Ashley) Gray, Melissa (Ben) Swartz, Cynthia (Faraz) Rapp Sandhu, Garrett Owen, Lauren Owen, Benjamin Owen, and eleven great nieces and nephews, who she endearingly called the “little ones”.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Adult Special Needs Class at First Evangelical Free Church. Share condolences and view tribute video at www.cozine.com. Services by Cozine Memorial Group – Cozine Life Events Center.
