Born on May 12, 1949, in Columbus County she was the daughter of the late Daniel Edgar Long and Lela Mae Canady Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son Larry Gene Gore and brother Thurl Long.
Ms. Janice was an active and faithful member of Soldier Bay Baptist Church, were she served in many positions in helping the church to grow.
Surviving are her husband, Walter Danny Smith; sons Ricky Smith (Victoria) of Shallotte, NC and Timmy Smith (Heather) of Ash, NC; a brother Virgil Long (Vivian) of Nakina, NC; sisters Kay Limon (George) of Supply, NC and Doris Duering of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; grandchildren Tanner Smith (Molly) and Allyson Smith; along with several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 2:30PM in the Soldier Bay Baptist Church, (3905 Whiteville Rd NW, Ash, NC 28420) officiated by the Reverend Jason L. Benton. Burial will follow in the Azor James Smith Family Cemetery, (3166 Longwood Road NW, Ash, NC 28420).
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30PM at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorials be made to the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick (955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422) in Ms. Janice's name.
Serving as pallbearers are Don Smith, Edward Smith, Michael D. Long, Jamie Willetts, Brian Duering, and Greg Limon.

Rick and I came to Soldier Bay a couple years ago, and from the very first time, Janice made us feel loved and welcome. When we moved away after about a year, she told us we couldn´t go because we belonged to them now. She was a woman of great faith, and such an inspiration to everyone. Thru all the battles she was facing, she held fast to God´s hand and stayed strong. We are better people for having known her and are forever changed because of her. Although we couldn´t make the trip for the service, our hearts and prayers have been with you all and will continue thru the coming days. Rest in peace, sweet Janice. Stay strong, Danny. Tina Davis

I am so sad to hear of Janice's passing. I did not know she was sick. I met her when I taught her son at Waccamaw. She was a very supportive kind parent to a sweet young man. My heart breaks for Danny, Timmy, Ricky and all of her precious family. Prayers for comfort and strength for all of you for the coming days.
