Patricia Wortman, 89 of rural Hastings, IA, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Arlington Place in Red Oak, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025 at the Loess Hills Funeral Home in Malvern, IA.
Burial will be in the South Grove Cemetery, rural Hastings.
Visitation at the funeral home will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Loess Hills Funeral Home in Malvern is caring for Pat and her family.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, her family will direct memorials.
OBITUARY
Patricia Ann Wortman, 89 of Hastings, IA, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at the Arlington Place in Red Oak, IA.
Pat was born on August 30, 1936 on a farm near Henderson, IA, the daughter of Emmett Melvin "Joe" and Mary (Wittwer) Straight. She attended two country schools before graduating from the Emerson High School with the class of 1954. Pat began her working career at United Farmers Mercantile in Red Oak. She then went to work at the Natural Gas Pipeline near Emerson until 1968. Pat was installed in 1993 as postmaster at the Hastings Post Office until her retirement in 2003.
Pat and Joseph Merritt Wortman were married on December 24, 1964 at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Emerson. They made their home on a farm south of Hastings and their marriage was blessed with a son, Joseph Michael.
Pat attended the Strahan United Methodist Church and was a longtime member of the Strahan UMW. She loved traveling with family, gardening both flowers and vegetables, canning, and visiting with friends. Pat enjoyed crocheting, was an excellent cook. Her family enjoyed many dinners held at her home. Pat and Merritt bowled with Plum Hollow Mixed Bowling League for 40 years. For many years, she helped with the planning of the Annual Emerson High School Reunion Banquet. Pat had a friendly smile and happy personality, and enjoyed spending time with her dear friend Colleen Gipe.
Pat and Merritt were married 46 years, when Merritt passed away on February 24, 2011 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA. Pat remained living on the farm until her health declined.
In addition to her beloved husband Merritt, Pat was preceded in death by her parents; brother Richard Straight; and brother-in-law Daniel Taylor.
Pat is survived by her son Joe Wortman of Hastings; sisters, Jean Ballain and husband Marlyn of Lake Havasu City, AZ and Delma "Mickey" Taylor of Star Harbor, TX; several nieces and nephews and their families; and a host of many special friends.
