Patrick Czytuck Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kloecker Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. - Erie (a.k.a. Francis V. Kloecker on Mar. 11, 2025.
Patrick P. Czytuck, age 72, of Erie, PA, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on March 10, 2025, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
Known affectionately as "Pat", "Patty", "Coach Czy", "Czy", or the one he loved best "Poppie", he dedicated his entire life to his family and shaping the lives of young people while building a legacy of commitment and service.
Born on April 30, 1952, in Erie, PA, at Hamot Hospital, Patrick was the son of the late Joseph and Joann (nee Ropelewski) Czytuck.
Pat grew up on the lower eastside of Erie and attended St. Hedwig's Grade School. He enrolled at the Cathedral Preparatory School for Boys in August 1966 where he excelled as a student and baseball player eventually becoming a proud member of the Prep Class of 1970. Pat received his BS in Mathematics from Gannon College in 1974.
His professional career began at St. John Kanty Prep (Erie, PA) where he taught a variety of subjects and coached football and baseball. In 1980, he returned to his high school alma mater where he began a legendary career as a math teacher and coach.
Coach Czy's name is synonymous with Cathedral Prep football. For an astounding 43 years, he served the program under five different head coaches, marking a period of service longer than any other coach at any level, in any sport, in the history of Cathedral Prep athletics. He is the only individual to coach in all nine of the program's state championship appearances, including the five triumphant state title wins in 2000, 2012, 2016, 2017, and 2018. He mentored many younger coaches and was a true coach's coach. He also coached baseball and track & field during his more than four decades of service.
His contributions were recognized with inductions into the Cathedral Prep Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021, the Metro Erie Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame in 2022, and the N.W.P.F.C.A. Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2017, honors befitting his profound impact on the Cathedral Prep and Erie communities.
Beyond the gridiron, Pat was a respected and long-tenured member of the Cathedral Prep Math Department, where he taught from 1980 to 2022. He often tutored students who needed help before and after school hours giving selflessly of his time. His commitment to the school was unparalleled. He supported thousands of young men and women through his roles as both a teacher and coach, exemplifying true integrity, dedication, and service to all who knew him.
Outside of work Pat enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and softball player. He was a long suffering, but faithful Cleveland Browns fan. He also rooted for the Cleveland Indians and Penn State Football.
Patrick is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Lee-Ann (nee Callista) Czytuck, whom he married on June 19, 1992. He is also survived by his step-son, Brian Peterson, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany (nee Wlodarczyk) Peterson; his cherished grandchildren, Courtney, Jordan, Cassidy, Blakely, Nova and Jakob Peterson; and his four great-grandchildren, Gabi, Silas, Oaklynn, and Theo.
Patrick's legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched through his teaching and coaching. His passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Cathedral Prep will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Friends may call on Thursday at the Cathedral Prep H. David Bowes Auditorium from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm and are invited to the Funeral Mass on Friday at St. Francis Xavier Church in McKean at 12 noon. Send condolences to www.kloeckerfuneralhome.com
Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Patrick's memory to the Cathedral Prep Football Boosters or the Erie Humane Society.

It's March 17th and the cry of "Patty me boy," would be heard when Coach walk through the doors of a place called Antlers... In the day all that had to be said was he's good. No over emphasized superlatives of a man, his career, his athletic ability and even his demeanor...Pat was good and I'm not certain if he was all Irish

Coach Cy was an incredible teacher and coach. You know somebody has a true passion for a subject or sport by how they are able to teach it. Coach Cy was able to teach math and the schematics of football in a very consumable way to all his students and players. He never put anybody down, only lifted people up. Personally for me, when I was a sophomore at Prep him along with Coach Mischler identified potential in me for the line. I still remember his fundamentals including but limited to "staying on train tracks!"

There will be a lot of memories of coach Cy in the classroom or on the field. Those memories are going to be remembered fondly and they should be but Coach Cy was more than just a coach and teacher. He is a foundational pillar of the Cathedral Prep legacy and a man that was the epitome of embodying what every student is promised to leave with at Cathedral Prep. Men of vision in spirit, mind and Body.

Thank you Coach for everything you´ve done for me and the thousands of students that were graced to know you. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten. God has a legend coming to him.

I was pitching for Carpetowne and we were playing in a weekend tourney in Akron. our regular catcher got sick and we were stuck for a fill-in until I told the manager that "I could get us a guy".Pat couldn't say "yes" fast enough. With him begging me to "just throw strikes", we won the tourney and celebrated appropriately afterwards. We talked about that w.e. for 40 yrs and it got better every time. The way he handled the stress of that w.e. told me all I needed to know about Pat as a competitor and friend. RIP BUBS.

I met Pat in July, 1969 in a Gannon summer program; he was playing baseball and doing math . He was truly one of the good guys with an everpresent smile. It seems we shared an appreciation for math mentor, the elder Mr. Freeman of Prep and Gannon fame. Having seen Pat only a couple of times since then, I emphatically say that he has accounted well for the gifts God gave him. And so, I thank God for the gift He gave us in Pat.
To all of Pat's beloved, I send prayers and condolences - may God bless and keep you always.

I knew Pat as a teaching colleague at Kanty Prep, and grew up in the same neighborhood as he and much of his extended family. I knew him as a quiet and self-effacing man, and I am so grateful to the Cathedral Prep community for recognizing and acknowledging his greatness, and turning him into the icon he deserved to be. Sending condolences and prayers to his family, and grateful to the Prep community that he will NEVER be forgotten!

So sorry to hear that Pat lost the battle with cancer. Patty and I won´t be in town, but we both extend our deepest sympathy for your loss. I was fortunate (or unfortunate) to coach football against the Ramblers and remember the precision of his offensive lines. Many great backs were the recipients of his stellar work with his linemen, many of whom excelled at the college level.

I´m so sorry that I wasn´t able to visit with Pat before he passed and we are out of town for the visitation. I extend my sympathy to you and your family. I´ll always remember how he took care of his mother. Good thoughts and memories even though there was an age difference and we hadn´t kept in touch through the years.

On behalf of the Mark/Linda Wagner family, deep felt condolences and prayers to you Lee-Ann and your whole family. We have so many fond memories of Pat beginning at Kanty where he he and I started the same year in 1974. He was my Algebra and Trig/Calculus teacher, my football and baseball coach for 4 years. We had so many conversations off on the side about sports.. about life. We became friends way back then. My sons and even grandsons were blessed to know and share a few stories with Coach Czy as a their teacher at Prep. Coach Czy, thanks for all the life lessons and heart felt memories. Your legacy will continue thru so many people. YOU TRULY ARE ONE OF A KIND! REST IN THE ARMS OF CHRIST.. FOREVER!
