NARRAGANSETT

Paul G. Bettencourt, Esq., 76, of Narragansett, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at South County Hospital, South Kingstown. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne E. (St. Jean) Bettencourt, and they had been married for the past 48 years.

Born in Terceira, Portugal, he was the son of Maria Gabriela (Carvalho) Bettencourt of Florida and the late Arnaldo Bettencourt. He moved to this country in 1964, settling in East Providence and later moving to Coventry, Scituate, and Narragansett.

Paul attended the University of Rhode Island and received his undergraduate degree in 1971. He furthered his education and received his Juris Doctor in 1981 from Suffolk University.

Mr. Bettencourt was a practicing attorney in East Providence for over 44 years.

Paul enjoyed fishing, skiing, and traveling, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was the founding president of Casa dos Açores. Alongside his professional schedule, Paul supported several social organizations: Citizens Concerned for Human Progress, SER Jobs for Progress of RI, Portuguese Social Club of Pawtucket, Grupo Amigos da Terceira of Pawtucket, Seven Castles Club of the Blackstone Valley, Prince Henry Society, União Portuguesa Beneficente, and Centro Cultural Mariense of East Providence. He was an honorary member of Coral Herança Portuguesa, Cranston Portuguese Club, Clube Juventude Lusitana, Clube Recreativo Cultural de Warren, Casa do Benfica de Rhode Island, and was the Marshal of the Day of Portugal Parade in Rhode Island.

In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves his son, Dr. John-Paul Bettencourt of Florida; his siblings, Rodrigo Bettencourt of Florida and Maria Olivia McKone of Florida; as well as several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Paul's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Friday, October 24, from 4 to 7 PM and continuing on Saturday, October 25, at 11 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 NOON in Our Lady of Fatima Church, One Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will be private.
