Paul Steven Binder was born in
Des Moines, Iowa on July 13, 1943, to Franklin (Bud) and Esther (Megan) Binder. A proud Beaverdale native, Paul remained part of the community for most of his life. He was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and attended Holy Trinity School and Dowling High School.
Paul made his home in
Des Moines, Iowa, but his spirit led him far beyond. He traveled the world and lived life fearlessly. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany before being sent to Vietnam, where he proudly served with the 1st Cavalry Air Mobile Division. He also served in the 186th military police co. in the ARNG.
Paul spent 32 years working at John Deere Des Moines Works, where he took great pride in his work and in his membership with Local 450 United Auto Workers. He often served as a union steward, always standing up for others and working to make a difference.
It was during his time at John Deere that Paul found his way to the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous. A turning point that led him to his deepest spiritual self, becoming happy, joyous, and free. Through that journey he not only transformed his own life but helped countless others along the way. His recovery even took him to the former Soviet Union, where he shared his experience, strength, and hope to carry the message of recovery.
Paul was deeply proud of his Irish heritage, and it showed in everything he did (and on most of his t-shirts). He had the gift of gab, a little ornery, and a quick wit. He loved a good laugh, good company, and the simple joy of being surrounded by family and friends. He carried the Irish spirit of resilience, generosity, and humor wherever he went.
Above all, Paul loved being a dad, and later a Grandpa, Papa, Pa, or whatever affectionate name his loved ones chose.
Paul was cherished and will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Joyce (Baker) Binder; children, Mary (Doug), John (Leonore), Anne (Jack), and Sarah (Jason); grandchildren, Grace, Luke, Clare, Quinn, Ronan, and Nolan; sister Ann; brother, Mark (Mary Ann) and by countless others who were fortunate enough to be touched by his life, including his dear sweet bonus grandchildren, Riley and Imani Dolphin.
Memorial contributions may be directed to: Des Moines AA Central Office and Intergroup, Holy Trinity Catholic Church or Divine Word College.
