Paul J. Clayton, Jr., affectionately known as Sonny, passed away on September 6, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and dedication. Born on September 4, 1944, in Spartanburg, SC, Sonny was the beloved son of Paul J. Clayton, Sr. and Edith T. Clayton.
Sonny had an illustrious career as a dedicated entrepreneur and was the proud owner of Boots' and Sonny's Drive-In. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly to provide exceptional service and warm hospitality to his customers. His drive and unwavering commitment made him a revered figure within the local community.
Family was at the core of Sonny's existence, and he had a profound love for his loved ones that knew no bounds. As a loving husband to Anna Jane "Bootsie" Clayton for 59 years, Sonny exemplified what it meant to be an outstanding partner. Together they built a foundation of love and support that will forever be treasured.
In every aspect of his life - from business to personal relationships - Sonny was known for his genuine character and integrity. He possessed an infectious smile that could brighten anyone's day and had an unwavering loyalty that made him a man of his word. Sonny's warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Beyond his professional achievements and family dedication, Sonny had a passion for cattle farming and collecting classic cars. These hobbies were a testament to his love for preservation and appreciation for the simple joys in life. When he was not tending to his business or spending time with loved ones, Sonny could often be found indulging in these interests, finding solace in their fulfillment.
Sonny leaves behind a remarkable legacy through his children, Paul J. "Clay" Clayton III (Kimberly) and Elizabeth C. "Libby" Carson. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren: Kyla "Drew" Carson (Zach), Jordan Clayton Ramos (Oscar), Allison Faith Clayton, Olivia Grace Clayton (Austin), Kelly Cameron Carson (Taylor), and Ashley Whaley (Chris); great-grandchildren: Kylan Herrmann, Kash Carson, Saphen Coggins, Odin Coggins, Anna Jane Coggins, and Elliott Whaley; as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Elizabeth "Libby" Clayton Corn and David F. "Ricky" Clayton.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Sonny's life during the visitation on September 9, 2023, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by Dr. Mike Hamlet and Clay Clayton. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
