Paul Stephen Pearce, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2024. He was surrounded by loved ones at home in Greer.
Steve grew up on Pawleys Island in a house built by his grandfather, William Wallace Pearce, one of the two original owners of the island.
He studied at Clemson and then enlisted in the Marines, where he instructed marksmanship. He went on to open his first laundromat, and then another, eventually co-founding Service Laundry Machinery, an LLC that grew to fourteen locations across the state.
A faithful person, Steve ministered to his broad local community. He served on the boards of the Triune Mercy Center and the United Ministries. He taught Sunday School classes to all ages for 40 years. He spoke regularly at Givens Prison, worked with the Soteria Community for ex-prisoners, and ministered the Hispanic community through donating food and clothing, attending their services, and visiting their homes to share knowledge of local resources. All who encountered him found an ear, a ready smile, and when wanted, a joint prayer.
Steve was an artist and created the boat sculpture in front of Disciples UMC. In a collaboration with Ray Paxton, he created the labyrinth at Dunean UMC.
His hobbies included golf, gardening, and Clemson football and basketball. He was an IPTAY Life Donor.
Above all, he loved his family, and he was loved.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elva; his nephew, Stevie Scofield and his son, Michael Spoon.
Steve is survived by his wife, Priscilla; his children, Annsie Harvell, Carrie Tribble, Lex Spoon (Fay Salvaras), and Rachel Glenn (Jake Sprinkle); his grandchildren, Ellison Harvell, Riley Harvell, Carolina Biggers, Roselind Glenn, and Isabella Sprinkle; his sister Susanne Dandridge (Benji Dandridge); his nephew, Todd Scofield (Melanie Scofield); his niece, Caroline Kuehn (Brad Kuehn); and his five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 25,2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown, followed by a funeral service at 3:30 p.m.
Donations may be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church at 304 E. Camperdown Way, Greenville, SC 29601 or Soteria Community Development, 210 Shaw Street, Greenville, SC 29609.

I knew him as Steve Pearce at St Giles Pres during the 80´s and early 90´s. Steve was a dedicated member and a great SS teacher. He mentored the New Hopes (sometimes known as the No Hopes) for several years during their middle school and early high school years. Steve was an inspiration to me. Steve and another Saint, Chuck English, were a joy to be around and work with. I remember seeing Steve often on his early morning walks on Hudson Road.
God Speed old friend.
