Paul R. Schaeffer, 94, formerly of West Lawn, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024, in the care of the dedicated staff of Phoebe Berks. He was the widower of Lorraine H. (Degler) Schaeffer, who passed away July 17, 2020, after 69 years of marriage.
Born in Upper Bern Township to the late Samuel M. and Mary (Klopp) Schaeffer, and step-mother, Margaret (Bright) Schaeffer, Paul graduated from Hamburg High School in 1947. He graduated from Penn State University in 1951 with his Bachelor of Science in chemistry and later graduated from Drexel University with his Master of Science in chemistry.
Paul served his country honorably in the United States Army.
During his distinguished career, Paul worked as a chemist for Gulf Oil, Rohme + Haas, Polymer Corporation, VF Corporation, and A.I. W. Frank Corporation. He held several patents within his field.
Alongside his wife, he was the owner and operator of Carvel Ice Cream at 5th Street in Muhlenberg and Reifton. He enjoyed real estate investment and owned several rental properties.
Paul enjoyed an active life full of golfing, skiing, biking, and traveling. He also enjoyed singing and shared a passion for music with his wife. They were charter members of St. Peter's UCC of Wilshire.
Paul's memory will be treasured by his children, Susan E. Hall (Lawrence) of Birdsboro and Burton D. Schaeffer (Michelle) of Auburn; grandchildren: Katie Mazzi (Justin), Lisa Hickey (Matt), and Burt Schaeffer Jr. (Stephanie); and six great grandchildren; Julia, Alexis, Heather, Benjamin, Teagan, and Chase. He is also survived by a stepsister, Linda Gelsinger of Wooster, OH.
In addition to his wife and parents, Paul was predeceased by his brothers, Lester, Ray, and Earl.
Contributions in his memory may be offered to St. Peter's UCC, at 2901 Curtis Rd, Reading, PA 19609, or to Phoebe Berks, payable to "Phoebe-Devitt Homes," Phoebe Ministries Office of Philanthropy at 1925 Turner Street, Allentown, PA 18104.
Services will be private. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
