Paul B. Streng

Paul B. Streng, age 75, a lifelong Howell resident and active community member, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024, in Ann Arbor. He was born on January 8, 1949 in Howell, the son of Richard and Victoria (Starkey) Streng. He is survived by his wife Cynthia "Cindy" (Grimes) Streng, sister Dawn (Carl) Barhydt and many friends throughout the country and the world. Paul was a 1967 graduate of Howell High School and received his Bachelor's Degree in Communications from MSU in 1976. He dedicated much of his life to the Howell community by serving as a volunteer firefighter and as Assistant Fire Chief of the City of Howell Fire Department, city councilman, Mayor Pro Tem, then was elected to three terms as Mayor (1991 to 1997). He was Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority and current Chairman of the Planning Commission. He received the Howell Distinguished Community Service Award, and was named Citizen of The Year in 1996. Paul was employed as a College Instructor for 44 years at Michigan State University and retired from teaching in the Construction Management Program and received the MSU Presidents Award for Community Service. He enjoyed his time as Faculty Advisor to a number of student organization including the MSU Rodeo Club, and study abroad programs, which he led to Russia and Italy and served as onsite faculty for MSU in Dubai. Through his dedication to firefighting service, he became president of the Michigan State Fireman's Association and served four terms as Vice Chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council and was a U.S representative to the World Federation of Volunteer Firefighters in 1985. Paul was a licensed HAM radio operator and enthusiast, member of the First Presbyterian Church of Howell and enjoyed spending time in Saint Martin for many years.
