Paul D. Walters, Sr.

Paul "Swanny" D. Walters, Sr., of Barnesville, PA died Tuesday, February 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Paul was the widower of Irene Kershetsky Walters. He was born on October 8, 1946. He was the beloved son of the late Paul Davies Walters and Gladys Moyer Walters of Mahanoy City.

Paul was a proud 1964 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School and a 1968 graduate of Bloomsburg State College, where he earned his degree in secondary education. He began his teaching career in 1968 with the Saint Clair School District and dedicated 38 years to education, concluding his career with the Pottsville Area School District. Throughout his years as an educator, he made a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.

He is survived by his three children: Melissa Honus and her husband John Honus of Barnesville; Christy Senglar and her husband Brian Senglar of Barnesville; and Paul Walters, Jr. and his wife Irene Walters of San Antonio,Texas. He was a proud and loving grandfather to three wonderful grandchildren: Caitlin and Carly Honus, and Kaylee Senglar all of Barnesville. His grandchildren were the joy of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them, attending their sporting events, activities and many trips to the beach.

Paul is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Mertz and her husband Daniel Mertz of Gilbertsville, PA; their children, Heather Lowe and Christopher Mertz; his sister-in-law, Kathleen Kershetsky of Delano; a step-granddaughter Brianna Walters as well as a great niece and nephew.

He greatly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, attending Penn State football games, tailgating with his family, and taking his morning breakfast trips with friends. Paul had a deep appreciation for the history of Mahanoy City and loved sharing stories and conversations about his hometown. He enjoyed his many years of playing softball and being an officer in the Mahanoy City Adult Softball League and was a member of the West End Fire and Rescue Co., Mahanoy City.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mahanoy City Public Library or the West End Fire and Rescue Co, Mahanoy City.

Calling hours to celebrate Paul's life will be held on Sunday, February 22, from 5 to 7 PM at the Lamar Christ Funeral Home, Hometown. Funeral services will be held privately with the family on Monday, February 23.

Paul will be remembered for his devotion to family, his commitment to education, and his enduring love for his community.
