Paul Glen Wiggans passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on June 16, 2025 at the age of 51. He fought a courageous twenty-year battle with myotonic dystrophy. He was born on August 19, 1973 in Washington, D.C. to Marlo and Glen Wiggans.
Having moved to Georgia at the age of twelve, Paul attended Athens Academy, where he formed many lifelong, cherished friendships. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1996. He worked in parks and recreation programs in Winder, Jefferson, and Athens.
In 1997, Paul met his wife, Angie on a blind date to see the Atlanta Braves. Someone gave Paul four tickets, two of which he sold. Since Angie neither ate nor drank on the date, he always joked that it was the only date where he actually made money! He realized she was a catch and proposed a year and a half later. Paul was quick-witted and an excellent story-teller. He loved to laugh and make others laugh too. Perhaps Paul’s greatest source of pride was his son, Alex. Paul loved Alex wholeheartedly and could talk about his achievements and character for hours on end. Despite his disease, Paul’s family and faith continued to be at the forefront of his life. Angie was by Paul’s side without fail, and loved him deeply through his struggles and challenges.
Paul was an insatiable sports fan and cheered on his beloved Dawgs every Saturday in the fall. He also loved the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. In fact, one of the best days of his life was when he and a fellow Yankees fan made the ultimate road trip to New York City to watch the World Series.
As Paul’s disease progressed, he was unable to live the active life he and his family loved and valued. His parents, Marlo and Glen, showed unwavering commitment in loving Paul and supporting him in all facets of his life. Even on the hardest days, Paul found joy and comfort in his Saturday lunch dates with his faithful friend and confidant, Joe Mason, during which they enjoyed watching sports and talking about life’s hardships and victories. Joe was a steadfast friend who showed up week in and week out for years.
Paul is survived by his parents, Marlo and Glen, wife, Angie, son, Alex, brothers, Scott (Melissa), Keith (Alice), nieces, Brooke, Zoe, Blair, and Quinn as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Home Instead Caregivers and Empyrean Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Methodist Church on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 11AM with Rev. David Maginnis officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10AM at the church prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation, 663 Thirteenth St, Suite 100, Oakland, CA 94612.
