With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Paula Kay "PK" Hughes, who left this world peacefully on January 8, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 83. Born on April 22, 1941, in Pontiac, Michigan, Paula was the cherished daughter of Paul Ervin Stapp and Delma Kayga Stapp. She lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to her family and community, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Paula was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her brothers, Tom, Richard, and Mike Stapp. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Fabol Hughes, with whom she celebrated a loving marriage on October 11, 1962. Together, they created a beautiful family, which includes their daughters, Robin Lange (Bruce), Melissa Watkins (Chris), and Kim Hughes, as well as their son, Charlie Hughes (Susie). Paula was a proud grandmother to Cooper Hughes, Brady Hughes, Ian Watkins, and Tyler Hall, and she adored her great-grandson, Emerson Hughes. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Hollis (Ron), her cousin Kathy Tanner (Tom), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins across Michigan, Louisiana, and Texas. PK cherished her dear family friends, Kay and Jerry Stephenson, and her grand dogs: Niko, Ty, Sophie, Ollie, Baxter, and Jaxson.
Paula's education was marked by her time at St. Agnes Academy and later at Friendswood High School, from which she graduated in 1961. A spirited cheerleader, she brought enthusiasm and joy into every aspect of her life. Her vivacious spirit continued throughout her life as she embraced her hobbies and interests with passion. Paula had a love for concerts, dancing, and spending precious time cheering for her grandchildren at their ballgames. Her laughter filled the room.
An ardent supporter of her favorite teams, Paula was a huge fan of Katy Tiger football and the Houston Astros and her favorite player, Jose Altuve. Among her many joys, she found delight in watching football, playing games like UNO and Chicken foot, and indulging in her shopping passion, particularly for shoes. Known for her beautiful and contagious smile, Paula was kind, compassionate, sweet yet sassy, always putting others before herself. Her heart of gold shone brightly through her genuine nature and her unwavering passion for all children. Paula loved the color red, and it was always incorporated into her surroundings.
Paula served as a proud ambassador of the city of Katy, where she had the honor of being the First Lady while her husband served as the Mayor. Her dedication to the community extended to her role as a member of The Parks and Recreation Board of The City of Katy, where she tirelessly contributed to the enhancement of her beloved city.
A visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Schmidt Funeral Home – Grand Parkway Chapel followed by A Celebration of Paula's Life at 5:00 PM with Rev. Nick Sholars and Rev. Howard Huhn officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Shriners Hospital or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in honor of PK's lifelong commitment to helping children.
As we remember Paula Kay "PK" Hughes, we celebrate a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Her legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. Rest in peace, Paula; you will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
