Peggy McDevitt of Mahopac, New York passed away peacefully at her home on November 4, 2023. Peggy was born April 3, 1938, in County Mayo, Ireland to the late Mary and Martin McCann.
Peggy immigrated to the United States in 1959. She met the love of her life, Robert (nee Bobby) McDevitt of County Donegal, Ireland at an Irish dance in the early 60s, the two married in 1964 and settled in Mahopac in 1972 where they raised their four children and built a life filled with love and laughter. After losing her husband in 1989, Peggy studied for the United States Citizenship Test and officially became an American citizen in the early 90s.
There is nothing Peggy loved more than tending to her plants, a whiskey sour and an exciting game of 31 surrounded by her family and friends. Peggy was a woman of great faith and an active parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac. When you entered Peggy's home, she wouldn't hesitate to leave her spot on the couch where she enjoyed watching game shows, sports and Judge Judy to extend her warmth and kindness to make you feel at home. Peggy will be greatly missed by all who loved her and were lucky enough to have crossed her path.
Peggy cared deeply for her family, friends and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Peggy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bobby. She was also predeceased by her siblings; brothers Jack, Maut, Mick, and Peter McCann and sisters Mary Horan, Judy Duffy and Eileen Sheridan.
She took comfort in the love and support of her family and found joy in the precious moments she shared with them. She is survived by her children whom she never stopped loving; sons Robert (Dina), Michael (Judy) and Thomas (Sharron) and daughter Kathleen. She is also survived by her devoted sister Kathleen Edwards. She was adored by her grandchildren Angela, Bobby, Anna, Madeline and Liam McDevitt and Brianna Hurd.
Friends may call on Wednesday, November 8 from 3-7 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 US Route 6, Mahopac, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 9 at 10 am at Our Lady Queen of Angel's Chapel of St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Brewster, NY.
