Peggy Joyce McHam

Peggy Joyce May McHam, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at her home near Pettit surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Visitation will be held starting at 11:00 AM to receive condolences, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM, on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Krestridge Funeral Home in Levelland, Texas. Graveside services will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock, Texas.

Peggy was born on November 27, 1937, in Hockley County to R.D and Ella Ann May. As the eldest of three children, she lost her precious mother when she was 13. She then became mother and big sister to her two younger brothers.

Peggy met the absolute love of her life, Jimmy Lee McHam, when she was 16. Marrying in their teens, they were very seldomly separated by time or distance and lived a love story for the ages, for better or worse.

Peggy is survived by children: Debbie and Mike Coday, Jacque and Louis Fleming, Donna and Mike Ocheskey, Jay McHam and Blair Gowens, Terry McHam, Sharla and Todd Sessums, Teresa McHam, 36 grandchildren, and 48 great-grandchildren. Also surviving Peggy are her brothers Eldon May and wife Jeanne, Royce May and wife Marilyn, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Peggy was preceded in death by Jim, her husband of sixty-nine years, their son, Timothy Duane McHam, along with her parents and many other precious family members who have undoubtedly welcomed her into heaven.

Throughout her lifetime, Peggy prioritized her strong faith in God and the value of education and hard work. Instilling these ideals in her children was of utmost importance. She was a long-time member of the Whiteface Church of Christ where she served as a youth teacher for many years and helped plan and execute many Vacation Bible School sessions. Peggy had a beautiful voice and always looked forward to singing church hymns whenever the occasion arose. After decades of raising her family, Peggy led by example and continued her own education earning an associate’s degree from South Plains College and completing one year at Texas Tech University in hopes of entering the teaching profession. However, due to a nationwide economic downturn, Peggy chose to take a position with Shugart Studios in Levelland where she remained employed for 20 years before retiring.

A graduate of Whiteface High School, Peggy continued to tirelessly serve the community in various roles through activities such as Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, Little League Baseball, softball, and many other school sports and organizations.

Peggy was also an accomplished seamstress, sharing her talents and skills to fashion many dresses, pants, shirts, and quilts for her family, friends, and school groups and events. She was also an amazing cook. To this day, folks who have enjoyed Peggy’s dishes in the past continue to request her recipes for some of their favorites.

Above all, Peggy loved her family. She loved being a wife, a mom, a grandma, G-Ma, a great-grandma, and was a loyal friend to many others she considered family. Her genuine love for people was displayed by always focusing on others rather than herself. She absolutely loved and welcomed any opportunity to travel and watch her kids and grandkids compete or perform in activities. Peggy enjoyed capturing video of many of these events and compiled an extensive library that she shared with family to preserve precious moments.

As we walked with Mom through her battle with dementia, she never seemed to lose her cheerful disposition and sense of humor. As the disease progressed, she was able to hold onto many memories of great times we had in the past. She was able to call most of us by name to the very end and often expressed deepest gratitude for the years spent with Dad and their many blessings.

Peggy’s impact on family, friends, and community will never be forgotten. Although Mom and Dad are dearly missed, we rejoice knowing that they are reunited once more, and they are celebrating together their heavenly reward in the presence of Jesus. God is Good!
