First, though, on his full name - Peter Lynwood Beck. He was adopted as a premature baby by Evelyn Eastman and Norman Wood Beck. They took the Lyn from his mother Evelyn and the Wood from his father, thus showing both their true desire to make him their child and giving him part of themselves for the rest of his life - and beyond, if I can fit it on the tombstone.
So now I come to the tragic end of our relationship. It began in December 1970, aided by a pair of Divine Practical Jokes. The Jokes continued throughout our lives.
We both had a fondness for bad puns, English humor - he introduced me to Monty Python - and the like. We became spouses, and in all the years we knew each other neither of us ever uttered a SINGLE harsh word to the other.
He was a gentle soul, a kind person full of love, and a sincere Quaker. He attributed his many wonderful qualities to his parental upbringing, Wilmington College in Ohio, and Morningside Quaker Meeting. His career - housing coordinator for the privately funded North Hudson Community Action agency - was a highly Christian one, for it involved helping hundreds of the
deserving needy find or keep housing in emergencies. Indeed, when I found - as a result of another Miracle - that I was now Christian, he had made it non-threatening. He enabled me to replace the hatred and desire for revenge from years of daily bullying in grade school with love. And most importantly, he took my loneliness away, something that will now return to haunt me the rest of my life. My very soul is shattered by my loss.
At least I was able to free him of his fear of the oblivion death - a God of Love is incapable of destroying love, so we will again be together in Heaven when my time has come.
Until then, God how I miss him!
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 12pm at Hillside Cemetery,
Metuchen.
