Philip Mark Clegg
1939 ~ 2025
Philip Mark Clegg, our beloved father, husband, and grandfather, passed from this life on March 26, 2025, in the evening, to return to his beloved Heavenly Father. He was born on May 8, 1939, and lived to almost eighty-six years old. He and his wife Nona were residing at Beacon Crest Senior Living in Draper, Utah, and had recently been living in Daybreak in South Jordan.
He left behind his eternal sweetheart, Nona Lura (Hull) Clegg, eight living children (in order of birth): Oleah (Clegg) Morris, Douglas Brigham Clegg, Perry Sterling Clegg, Jeanette (Clegg) Welch, Donelle (Clegg) Pyne, Camille (Clegg) Penny, Minette (Clegg) Hale, and Spencer Mark Clegg, with their supportive and loving spouses. He was preceded in death by his second daughter Lisa (Clegg) Brown and his granddaughter Addie Dunn. His thirty-six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren are a living legacy, walking in the footsteps of his exemplary life.
A Man of Brilliance and Invention
From his early life, Philip showed a brilliance in mathematics and an awareness of the possibilities of the world around him. He followed his dream in studying physics, achieving a bachelor's degree in that field from the University of Southern California summa cum laude in June of 1971. He used his talents and research to develop his career as a contracting engineer and founded Clegg Engineering, Inc. His company completed the grading work on the Southern California Outdoor Pacific Amphitheater and Newport Beach California Temple, and he became President of the Southern California Contractor's Association before moving to Utah. He further developed, designed, and filed multiple patents-a true pioneer in the physics world. He often included his sons in this work. One of his friends remarked that "Philip Clegg is the smartest man I ever knew."
Endurance, Integrity, and Faith
He gained a foundation of endurance and faith while growing up on a ranch in Niter (Grace), Idaho. The son of Lucille Winder Croxall and Donald Willard Clegg, Philip learned from a young age the essential qualities of integrity and hard work-lessons he faithfully passed on to his posterity and associates. In his work as owner of Clegg Engineering, Inc., companies often contracted with him because of this honesty and work ethic.
He was and is a man of endurance and unwavering faith, serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in whatever capacity asked. He served a full-time mission in the California Mission from 1959 to 1961, as well as a mission with his wife Nona in the Ohio Cincinnati Mission from 2003 to 2004. The callings he served in included high councilor, bishopric counselor and executive secretary, high priest executive secretary, scout master, temple worker, and Primary teacher. He magnified his organizational and leadership skills in every calling. He had great love for his Primary children and they returned this love in full.
Sacrifice and Love
Philip sacrificed everything for his Savior and Heavenly Father's kingdom, always putting it first through service, counsel, and love. He also gave everything for his family, teaching and sharing his testimony until his passing. Even as he became stricken with a debilitating muscular disease and was no longer able to care for himself, in the weeks before his passing, he showed his enduring sense of humor and love for the gospel of Jesus Christ by requesting hymns, instrumental music, and scripture readings from his posterity. He would often say, "Everyone has trials."
Philip also had a deep love for BYU sports and was looking forward to watching the next basketball game with his wife.
His North Star
Finally, but most importantly, Philip adored his wife Nona, whom he married on September 1, 1961. He spoke of her reverently and cared for her until the end. He confided that his love for her was the center of his reason for all of his accomplishments. From their courtship, when away from each other, they would find the Big Dipper and look for the north star and know they would be thinking of each other. Philip will continue to look for that star from above and Nona will continue to look for it from below. That star and their temple covenants will lead them together again.
He lived a life filled with love, devotion to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and an insatiable thirst for learning. He was and is a role model to all.
Funeral services for Philip will be held on Friday, April 4, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 4517 West Mille Lacs Drive, South Jordan, Utah 84009. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday morning from 9:30-10:30 am prior to services at the church. Interment will follow services at 3:00 pm in the Highland City Cemetery, located at 6200 West 11000 North Highland, Utah 84003.
