Sooo... I knew Phil when he worked out at Sierra Sport and Raquet Club in Fresno, CA. I believe it was during the late 80´s or early 90´s.
I was a kid working out in this small gym, I did not know that Phil was a professional bodybuilder. To me he was a really strong guy I would pester with endless questions about if I was doing various exercises correctly, if my form was proper.
He was always very kind and would assure me my efforts were good and give any tips he had.
I have a funny memory of some other boys asking him for the secret to being strong or growing one´s muscles...
He conspiratorially asked them if they were ready to learn the Ultimate exercise!
Of course they were eager to be so instructed, I watched on, also eager for this revelation:
He instructed the boys to kneel and raise their hands to the ceiling, bring their hands back to their belly and extend them out over the floor until they had to support their lost balance with their foreheads against the ground, then to center themselves and repeat this sequence...
He just stood, arms crossed, one foot on a weight bench, as these young fools prostrated themselves in mock obesience.
I started snickering, and the wisest of them stopped and saw the hilarity and started laughing out loud.
The other boys after a moment of indignation did the same.
Jon Olson was also present and was casting me sidelong glances throughout the proceedings.
I think Chuck Dendren May have been there as well.
I am sad to hear of his passing.
I am glad he was well loved.
Only competed in bodybuilding one time, he was supportive. He also made it clear that in regards to PEDs I was off limits.
Once I learned what these were I had made my all natural intentions clear and known, and he with others were respectful and supportive of my decision.
Did not know how famous he was until long after this story.
Really great guy, and a tremendous athlete.

March 2022. Just learned of Phil's passing. Met years ago at a contest. Lost contact but always thought of him as a GREAT MAN and a great guy. He was a great person and a great representative of Bodybuilding. RIP Phil. Not many like him. Condolences to all who knew him and loved him.
