Philip J. Spitzley, of Sunfield, Michigan passed away at the age of 95 years old, on November 11, 2024, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born January 12, 1929, in Portland to Leo and Therese (Fox) Spitzley. Philip married the former Elizabeth (Betty) Breimayer on May 29, 1954, in Belding. The love of his life, Betty preceded him in death 2008. Both Philip and Elizabeth enjoyed time with their families and many, many wonderful friends.
Honorably discharged in 1952 with the rank of Sergeant First Class, Phil served in the Army beginning in 1950 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska. Phil was also a proud lifetime member of the Portland VFW Club and served in the honor guard for many years.
Phil began his working career as owner/operator of his own bulldozing (excavating) business for many years. While operating this business, he also worked tirelessly for many years developing what became the family farm, initially raising a few animals and ultimately numerous crops. Phil retired from the farming he so loved in 1994 and enjoyed helping his sons and son-in-law with farming chores in his later years. Phil always enjoyed his beautiful garden, but mostly enjoyed the precious time that he spent with his numerous grandchildren and family members around him. In his earlier years, he was always available for a quick game of cards, or a round of golf.
Phil is survived by his children: Steve (Vikki) Spitzley of Lake Odessa, Randy (Brenda) Spitzley of Freeport, Debbie (Dave) Crumbaugh of Perrinton, and Becky (Brian) Haskin of Sunfield. Phil is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and two, great-great-grandchildren.
Phil was preceded in death by his youngest son, Doug Spitzley, in 2013. He was also preceded in death by all ten of his siblings: brothers, Leo Jr., Robert, Harold, Dave, Alvin, Roy, and Jim, as well as his sisters, Joan (Eddie) Schmitz, Wilma (Rip) Schmitz, and Alice (Louie) Esch.
The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2024, with Rev. Mike Alber officiating. Rite of Committal will be at Portland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, November 18, 2024 with the rosary being prayed at 3:00 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church or to the Portland VFW, Post #4090. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
