Phyllis J Adams

Phyllis J. Adams, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025, in Lakeland, Florida.
Born on May 22, 1934, Phyllis grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, alongside her beloved twin brother, Richard Dick Jones. She graduated from Fletcher High School and went on to earn her undergraduate degree in Math and Elementary Education from the University of Florida, and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, serving as President of her chapter. While in college, she met the love of her life, James Jim L. Adams. They married on February 21, 1958, in Neptune Beach. Phyllis later earned a masters degree in Reading from Florida State University.
Following in her mothers footsteps, Phyllis dedicated her life to teaching. She was a compassionate educator who was recognized by the Governor of Florida for her students outstanding performance in math on the Florida Statewide Assessment Test at Godby HS in Tallahassee. She taught Math at Winter Haven High School. After teaching, Phyllis dedicated time to private tutoring in reading for children with reading disorders. Phyllis was a master bridge player, painter, cake artist, and blessed all with her custom cards and poems.
Phyllis is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years, James (Jim) Adams; her children, Sheryl Blommel, Stephen Adams (wife Diann), and Lynn Peck (husband Allen); grandchildren Stephanie Marques (James), Sierra Blackwell (Brian), Winston Gardner, Nikki Gardner, Adam Peck (fiance Jessica Thomas), and Lauren Peck; great-grandchildren Danielle Adams, Justin Davis, Scarlett Davis, Beau Davis, Jack Marques, and Oliver Marques; nieces Debbie Pittman and Ginger Jumper, and sister-in-law Elaine Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents Warren Buck H. Jones and Lois P. Jones; her twin brother Richard Dick Jones; nephew Richard Rick Jones; and children Karen E. Gardner and James L. Adams III.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Lakeland Funeral Home, 2125 Bartow Rd, Lakeland, FL 33803. Gathering begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the service at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow at Lone Palm Golf Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Talbot House Ministries or The University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI).
Phyllis will be deeply missed by family and all who knew her especially her cherished bridge group, Bible study fellowship, and her beloved husband Sonny.
