Phyllis Jean Alvarez, 73, of Choctaw, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous 15-year battle with liver disease.

Born February 19, 1952, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Phyllis moved to Muskogee in 1961. She graduated from Muskogee High School and pursued her passion for education, earning an associate degree from Connors College in 1977, a bachelor's degree from Northeastern State University (NSU) in 1979, and a master's degree from NSU in 1989. She taught 3rd grade at Hilldale Elementary in Muskogee for 7 years, served as a reading specialist for one year at Jarman Junior High and Pleasant Hill Elementary in MWC, and dedicated 26 years teaching at Epperly Heights Elementary in Del City as a third-grade teacher and reading tutor. After 34 years in the classroom, Phyllis retired in 2016 to care for her parents in Muskogee during their final years. Alongside her teaching, Phyllis and husband Tony pastored Harrah First Assembly of God from December 1986 to June 2015, touching countless lives with her faith and compassion.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her nephew, Mark Wayne Capps; brother, Danny Ray Capps; sisters-in-laws, Carolyn Ann Capps and Kathy Marie Capps; parents, Ollie Ray Capps and Coralee Capps (maiden name Banks); and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Tony Alvarez; daughters, Shellie Cargill (husband Chad) of Choctaw, OK, and Valerie Eskue (husband Chris) of Harrah, OK; grandchildren, Cargills: Camden (wife Mia), Cayce, Creed, Clarity, Cai, Carli, Crosby, and Cat; Eskues: Raylee and Logan; great-grandchildren, Bear and Truth Cargill and great-grandbaby #3 on the way; brothers, Buddy and Mike Capps of Muskogee, OK; sister, Cathy Sue Capps of Bixby, OK; and many nieces, nephews, and loved ones. Phyllis was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, known for her deep faith in Christ and unwavering love for her family.

A funeral service will be held at Bethesda Assembly, with interment at Harrah Cemetery, Memory Lane. Per her instructions, in lieu of flowers, and to honor her years as an educator, memorial gifts or donations can be made to the grandkids and great grandkids education fund at https://gofund.me/6d52366f9.
