Phyllis Newland Brigham passed away peacefully at home in Kirkland, Washington, on her 102nd birthday.
Phyllis was born in Pasadena, California on May 29, 1923. She grew up in Glendale and Redlands, and attended the University of California Berkeley and the University of Southern California.
Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, she signed up to serve her country as an enlisted United States Marine, teaching instrument navigation to military pilots. Later, she volunteered to serve as a captain for another two years during the Korean War.
She attended The Art Students League and also worked in New York City for many years. She met and married her husband while employed by the U.S. Army in Verdun, France.
She was an exceptional artist, excelling at portraiture, drawing, and painting. She was also a prolific consumer of books, current events, travel, and other intellectual pursuits.
Her parents, sister, husband, and one great-grandchild predeceased her. She is survived by her three children, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
At her request, she will be buried near her husband at Tahoma National Cemetery, with no services or ceremony. The family requests no flowers. If any are so inclined, the family suggests donations be made to a local hospice provider organization of the donor's choice.
