Phyllis Jean Newberry, 75, died Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born June 1, 1949, in Eads, Colorado.
Phyllis grew up in the Garden City area and attended schools in Pierceville and Ingalls. She graduated from Ingalls High School. She then attended and graduated from the school of cosmetology at Garden City Community College. She began her working career at Studio 1. Phyllis then worked as an instructor of cosmetology at the college for several years. Later, she worked at Genesis, The Nook, Shear Techniques, T.G.'s, and Color Works. Phyllis loved fixing hair, traveling, going to the casino, and had a love for dogs.
Survivors include two children Eric & wife Lesa Newberry of Garden City and Lana & husband Jeremy Knoll of Holcomb, KS; a brother Marvin & wife Lucy Lyon of Sterling, KS; 5 grandchildren Alexis & husband Craig Drees of Garden City, Ethan Newberry of Salina, KS, Kobe Hands of Wichita, KS, Gunner Newberry of Garden City, and Macie Knoll of Holcomb, KS; and 2 great-grandchildren Amelia Drees and Ellea Newberry. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents Fred and Robert Norton; a brother Robert Lyon; and a sister Joy Bayse.
A Celebration of Life for Phyllis will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Garden City, Kansas. A private family burial will take place at a later date at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Phyllis Newberry Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City. Condolences may be given at garnandfuneralhomes.com.
