Phyllis S. Slayton was born on January 1, 1957, in Milford, Delaware to Winifred Slayton and the late Joseph Slayton, step father Lawrence Young. On October 20, 2025, Phyllis peacefully made her final journey home to be with the Lord.
Phyllis was affectionally known as Mi by her grandchildren.
Phyllis graduated from Milford High School in 1975 and she also attended Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown, Delaware. Her strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout her career. She began her professional journey at Con-Agra in Milford, Delaware, and later spent 20 years plus of service, retiring at Allen Foods, in Harbeson, DE. At Allen Foods she was a Union Stewardess. She went on to serve in dietary food services at Harbor Healthcare, where her kindness and compassion touched many lives.
A devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Phyllis could often be found cheering for her favorite team. She loved playing dominoes, spades, and board games with family and friends. In her earlier years she played on the GNR softball team and field hockey for Milford high school. She never missed a chance to attend her children and grandchildren's sporting events. Phyllis would always attend family gatherings and events, supporting those she loved. Watching Westerns were her daily delight, bringing her joy and comfort through the years.
From an early age, Phyllis's faith guided her life. She joined Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church as a youth. She sang in the youth choir and participated in community outreach. Her love for ministry continued to grow. Throughout her life she served faithfully in many capacities, including Pastor-Parish Chair, Church Choir Member, Administrative Board Chair, Church Secretary, Membership Secretary, Lay Leader Chair, Youth Ministries Leader, United Methodist Women's Conference Lay Member, Lay Servant, and Five-Fold Ministries Worship, Education, Youth & Children Leader. She served with Elaine Ayers on the Black Methodist Church Renewal of the United Methodist Conference (BMCR), and strengthening of the Black church committee. Phyllis was also a Praise Dance Leader, Usher, worked in the kitchen and Trustee.
As a member of New Life Ministries, Phyllis continued her dedication to service through the Men's and Women's Day ministries. She generously supporting youth programs and various church initiatives. Her faith, leadership, and giving spirit left a lasting mark on everyone who knew her.
Phyllis was preceded in death by 9 uncles Gilbert Davis (Rose), John Davis, Norman Davis (Estella), Thomas Davis (Marie), Circus Davis (Betty), Oliver L Slayton, Robert Morgan, George Benn, Lewis Benn, and four aunts Elsie Carroll (Clarence), Mary Davis, and Lillian Davis, Eleanor Slayton; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Slayton.
Phyllis's beautiful memories will forever be cherished by her son, Reginald Slayton Sr. (Keyshea) of Slaughter Neck, DE; her daughter, Pansey Slayton of Lincoln, DE; her five beloved grandchildren: Damon Whaley, Akira Slayton, Daymir Slayton, Reginald Slayton Jr., and Gabriel Slayton-Cosme. She is also survived by ; two brothers: Norman Slayton of San Diego, CA, and Glenn Slayton of Dover, DE two sisters: Kathleen Slayton and Monica Slayton, both of Slaughter Neck, DE; her three godchildren: Kyle Burton, Terrance Slayton, and Henry Nesmith Jr.; her loving aunt and godmother Mildred (Jose) Rodriguez of Slaughter Neck, DE and her loving aunt Dorothy Davis of Philadelphia PA, Cheryl A Benn of Norristown PA, uncles Ronald T Benn of Bala Cynwyd PA, Charles W (Eugenia) Benn of Harrisburg PA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Phyllis lived a life of love, faith, and service. Her laughter, strength, and devotion to family and God will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.

My condolences to the family. I knew Phyllis when she worked at Allen Foods. She was a beautiful woman inside as well as outside. She showed the God in her wherever she went. May she rest in peace.
