Pola Genes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home - Braintree on Apr. 2, 2025.
Pola E. (Spiliotes) Genes, of Braintree, formerly of Boston and Cambridge, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 92. Born on February 11, 1933, in Providence, RI, she was the cherished daughter of the late George and Katherine (Kanelos) Spiliotes.
Pola's journey through life was marked by her dedication to education and personal growth. She was a proud graduate of Cambridge Latin High School and furthered her education at the Catherine Gibbs School. The skills and knowledge she acquired paved the way for her success in business and her valuable contributions to her community.
Together with her late husband, Emmanuel "Lucky" H. Genes, Pola co-owned and operated a deli in Mattapan while simultaneously mothering four young daughters and even earning a real estate license. Later, the couple owned the Chef's Hat restaurant in Weymouth, which became a beloved local establishment under their care. Together they created a welcoming atmosphere through food and personal relationships that was unmatched, and their restaurant became a place where memories were made and traditions were honored.
After many fruitful years in the restaurant industry, Pola's resilience was on full display as she embarked on a second career as a Home Health Aide for the Dedham VNA. Her selfless nature shone brightly as she provided comfort and support to those in need. She also took care of her beloved husband following his stroke at age 64, that left him partially paralyzed and dependent, all while still working full time for the VNA. With grace, she assumed that caregiver role and seemed to consider it an honor to care for him, the absolute love of her life. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of care that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In her free time she was an avid collector of all things interesting, intellectual, beautiful and potentially valuable. She had collections of everything from records to books to paintings to coins to china to vintage clothing and more! Pola was also a gifted painter working with oil colors and creating many proud masterpieces.
Pola's loving spirit extended beyond her professional life and into the heart of her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Emmanuel H. "Lucky" Genes and a devoted mother to her four daughters: Leah Britt and Colette Hammers of Florida, Michelle Genes of Braintree, and Stacia Kates of Milton. Her role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, and she instilled in her daughters the values of love, kindness, and courage.
Her family circle included her dedicated brother, Ted Spiliotes of Florida, and she was predeceased by her brother Alec Spiliotes. Pola's legacy continues to flourish through her 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her love, guidance and wisdom were gifts that they will carry with them always.
Pola's life was a testament to the power of giving, and her presence was a source of strength to her family and friends. She will be remembered as a woman who faced life's challenges with resilience, courage and grace, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her love knew no bounds, and her kindness left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she encountered.
The family takes comfort in knowing that Pola's spirit will live on through the countless lives she touched. Her warmth, her generosity, and her unwavering commitment to her loved ones will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to experience her love. Her memory will be cherished and honored, as we hold her close in our thoughts and in our hearts.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation period on Monday, April 7th, from 9:30 – 10:00 AM in St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, 119 Common St., Braintree.
