Quay B. Crawford, 93, passed away peacefully on October 13, 202, Carthage Senior Care. She was born on March 27, 1932, in Quitman County, MS, to Daniel "Dee" and Stella Ann Brown.
Quay grew up in Quitman County and graduated from Marks High School in 1950. She attended Sunflower Junior College and later graduated from Delta State University, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree. Quay participated in BSU, Future Teachers of America, SJC Chorus, and the YWCA. She also served as literary secretary for the Retrospect newspaper. At Sunflower Junior College, she met her future husband, Howard Earl Crawford. They married in 1953 and were together for 50 years before his death in 2003. While Howard Earl attended graduate school at Mississippi State, Quay taught English there. Quay enjoyed reading and was an author, though never published; she wrote for college newspapers, community events, and for the places she lived later in life. She loved gardening, flowers, music, and art. She expressed creativity with paint, wood, and paper. Her admiration for her country and state. She was selfless and generous with her time, spirit, and support. She loved fully and unconditionally-whether it was family, friends, Howard, her pastors, or most of all, her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She faithfully taught Sunday School for years. If you knew Quay, you couldn't help but love her. She had a fun, joking spirit and an infectious giggle. She was full of grace and gentleness. Though she had no children of her own, she was a mother to hundreds, including two fur babies, Rachel and Sandy. She loved and spoiled all her nieces and nephews.
Quay is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel "Dee" and Stella Ann Brown, her husband, Howard Earl Crawford, and her brothers Earnest Brown R.E. Brown, Wayne Brown and Otis Brown: sisters Audie Timmpns, Odie Hastings, and Opal Lipford
She is survived by her 8 nieces, 7 nephews, as well as many great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. Also the many students throughout this country that Quay and Howard Earl taught throughout the their many years of teaching and helping others,
Graveside services at 10:30 am on Saturday October 18th, 2025 at Belzoni City Cemetery in Belzoni, MS. Mortimer Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
