R.L. King

R.L. King, age 75, husband of Cecelia Himes King, and a resident of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at his residence, after an extended health battle. 

 

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with pastors Steve Swango and Bud Porter officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in Polk Memorial Gardens. A visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. 

 

A native of Maury County, R.L. was born on September 29, 1949, and was the son of the late Earnest King and the late Rachel Eddelmon King. He graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1969 and married Cecelia, on August 28, 1972. R.L. dedicated many years to his career as a skilled meat cutter, working at several local grocery stores, including HG Hills, Food Land, Food Max, Albertsons, Food Lion, and Publix, until retiring in 2016.

 

A man of faith, R.L. was a devoted member of Loyal Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. His love for gospel music, playing the piano, and attending gospel singings was a cornerstone of his life. R.L. found joy in going to yard sales and spending time outdoors. Above all, his greatest joy came from his family, especially his grandsons, who were his pride and joy.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Rosemary (Dwayne) O’Quinn of Spring Hill, brother, Jimmy Carl King of Smyrna, grandsons, Clayton O’Quinn, Liam O’Quinn, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. 

 

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Rayburn King, Richard King, Earnest “Junior” King, Billy Ray King, and Betty Faye King Rayl. 

 

Pallbearers will be Michael King, Mark King, Robert Shackelford, Clyde Burke, Mark Baker, and Keith Brady. Honorary pallbearers will include members of Loyal Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. 

 

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gentiva Hospice, the staff of Caring Hearts, and special caregivers with Southern Hospitality Homecare, Cassie Mullis, Yolanda Brantley, and Taylor Lackey.
