Ralph Joseph Barbato Jr., a beloved figure in Rockaway Borough, NJ, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loved ones at St. Clare's Hospital in
Dover, NJ.
Born in
Dover, NJ, Ralph was the son of the late Ralph and Ann Barbato. He spent his entire life in Rockaway Borough, where he built lasting connections and made numerous contributions to his community. Graduating from Morris Hills High School in 1961, Ralph cherished his time there, especially his involvement in the football team.
Ralph served his country with honor as a Tank Commander during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his bravery and commitment to service. A devout Catholic, he was a lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in
Rockaway, NJ, where his faith remained a cornerstone of his life.
Professionally, Ralph was a Packaging Engineer at GlaxoSmithKline in
Parsippany, NJ, where he demonstrated his expertise and dedication until retirement. Additionally, he was a proud co-owner of Pro Sport in Rockaway Borough, alongside his brothers, Philip, Tom, and Peter.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ralph was deeply involved in his community serving on the Rockaway Borough Historical Society. He coached the Rockaway Borough Rams Youth Varsity football team, leaving a lasting impact on countless young athletes. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace in hunting and fishing, passions he shared with friends and family alike. Ralph was a founding member of the Rockaway Sports Club, where he played on the softball team, and he also enjoyed participating in a Rockaway Lanes bowling team. A devoted fan of the NY Giants and NY Yankees, he relished cheering for his favorite teams.
Proud of his Italian-American heritage, Ralph was an active participant in the annual Feast of St. Cesario in
Netcong, NJ, celebrating his culture and faith with enthusiasm.
Ralph is preceded in death by his brothers, Philip Barbato and Tom Barbato.
He is survived by his loving spouse of 57 years, Alice Barbato; his loving children, Melissa Pestritto (Nick) and Philip Barbato (Robyn); his cherished grandchildren, Harper and Zephyr Barbato; and his brother, Peter Barbato (Jeannie).
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave,
Rockaway, NJ 07866. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, followed by interment at St. Cecilia Cemetery in Rockaway.
