Dr. Ralph E. Dirksen

Dr. Ralph Edward Dirksen, 84, of Macomb, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on December 19, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born November 1, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Joseph and Irma (Brand) Dirksen. He married Diane E. Nelson on August 9, 1975, in Rockford, Illinois, and she survives.
Also surviving are his two daughters, Dr. Rebecca (Kendy Verilus) Dirksen of Bloomington, Indiana, and Suzanne (Ryan) McCormick of Tucson, Arizona; five grandchildren, Elijah, Emma, Elyse, and Eleanore McCormick, and Sky Verilus; and his brother, James (Jane) Dirksen of Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Howard Dirksen.
Ralph graduated from Norwood High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1959. He went on to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Industrial Education. He later received his master's degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and earned his doctorate from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
Ralph devoted his professional life to education, teaching Industrial Education and Technology (IE&T) at Western Illinois University for 43 years. He retired in 2012, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to his students and the field of education. The Annual Ralph Dirksen Technology Education Exhibition for Illinois high-school students, sponsored by the WIU Department of Engineering Technology, was named in 2014 in his honor, recognizing Dr. Dirksen's years of involvement and organizing of this event. Ralph was also a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 50 years.
A private family graveside service was held at Oakwood Cemetery. A celebration of life will be planned and announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
