Ralph Anthony "Tony" Ferguson Jr.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph Anthony Ferguson Jr., 70, who departed this world unexpectedly on August 6, 2024. Known to many as Tony, he was born Rafael Antonio Fernandez Jr. on July 13, 1954, in Texas City, to a Cuban immigrant, Ralph Anthony Ferguson, and Ginger Powell.

Tony’s dad played professional baseball (catcher for the AA affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers). Tony's educational path led him to high schools in Derby, Kansas, and Spring Branch High School in Houston. At the age of 17, he boldly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and even graduated from high school in the Philippines. 

During his military service, Tony worked as an aviation electronics technician on the USS Hancock, ATKRON 55 where he received the National Defense Service Medal for his aid in the evacuation of Saigon. He finished his military career in October 1979 at Naval Air Station Kingsville where he worked as an aircraft communications equipment IMA tech and received the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

In December 1979, Tony's path intersected with his beloved wife, Sheryl, whom he married in 1982. Together, they shared a life full of love and devotion.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Corpus Christi State University and his first position in the educational field was teaching kindergarten PE. His career led him to coach various sports including golf, basketball (boys and girls), football, track, and baseball in multiple school districts across Texas. He was a sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes throughout his career. He touched the lives of many colleagues and students alike in Taft, Beeville, Rio Grande City, Progresso, Victoria (Stroman), Somerset, Skidmore, Falfurrias, Odem, Lazbuddie and Pettus ISDs.

In retirement, Tony served as a Veteran Service Officer for Bee County, where he assisted and advised fellow veterans on filing claims. His commitment extended to working and holding offices in veterans' organizations, fundraising, and collaborating with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association.

He was a valued member of the VFW Post 9170 and Riders Unit 35, VFW Post 6119, American Legion Post 818, American Legion Post 413, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 0929, and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Tony found joy in listening to classic rock, reading Louis L'Amour stories, riding his motorcycle, and admiring classic cars. He took immense pride in attending sporting events, school activities, and recitals to support his children and grandchildren. Tony was also known for his dedication and loyalty to his friends, always offering a helping hand whenever needed and often donating breakfast to various local businesses.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Ferguson; his mother, Ginger Powell; a sister, Barbara Powell; and a brother, John Meyer.

Mourning her husband’s sudden death is his beloved wife of 42 years, Sheryl Ferguson; as well as his son, Will Ferguson; daughter, Kathleen Ferguson; grandson, Knox Ferguson; granddaughter, Harper Ferguson; brother and sister-in-law, James and Rachel Sanders; niece, Nicole Sanders; sister, Laura Ferguson; and cousin, Barbara Baker.

A memorial service will be held at the American Legion Hall in Three Rivers on Sunday, August 25 from 4 to 7 p.m.

An inurnment ceremony with military honors will be held at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. Monday, August 26, with Michael Todd officiating. Limited standing room only.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Tony's name to local veteran organizations.
