Randal Orland Hess, MD, 59, was called back to his heavenly father on January 22, 2025, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. Randal was the son of Martha Huntzinger Hess and Terry Orland Hess of Tremont, Utah. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1991 and subsequently graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1996 with a Doctor of Medicine. Following graduation, he entered the Residency in Radiation Oncology at VCU where he served as the Chief Resident in his final year and was later certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Hess' first clinical position was with Blue Ridge Cancer Care in Roanoke, Virginia, where he served as the Medical Director and Chief of Oncology at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. During his time with Lewis Gale, his practice extended to caring for cancer patients at Pulaski Community Hospital's cancer center. Throughout his time at both centers, he worked diligently to support his patients in their fight against cancer.
Dr. Hess began his Oncology practice with the St. Anthony Regional Hospital's Radiation Oncology Department in June of 2016. His engaging personality contributed positively to interactions with colleagues and patients. Dr. Hess became acquainted with the team, medical staff, and patients. He contributed significantly to the community through his involvement in the planning and development of a new Cancer Center. He took an interest in his patients' lives beyond their diagnoses and often inquired about their hobbies and families. Dr. Hess was a committed member of the medical staff who supported the mission and vision of St. Anthony. Additionally, Dr. Hess served on the Board for New Hope Village.
Dr. was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking and mountain biking and loved scuba diving. He was a devoted father to two daughters and a fiercely loyal friend to those close to him.
Dr. Hess is survived by his mother Martha Hess and his two daughters Abigail Virginia Hess and Victoria Jane Hess.
A celebration of Randal's life will take place at St. Anthony's Regional Cancer on Sunday January 26, 2025 at 1:00 pm
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left for the St. Anthony Cancer Center.
