Born in 1939 to Frances and Raymond Carlson, Ray practiced law for 50 years and ran his own practice for more than three decades, guiding families through buying and selling homes, and only taking divorce cases "if it was already agreed who was getting the toaster." Known for his wit and pragmatism - once accepting mulch for payment - he was deeply devoted to his profession. Yet throughout his life, he found the most joy spending time with his family, strumming his guitar and listening to live music.
Ray is survived by his wife of 54 years, Catherine; sons Ryan (Katie), Quinn (Julie), Kevin, and Luke (Andra); and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Cass and Myra.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 18, from 2:30 PM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 3:30 PM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 3500 Washington St., McHenry, 60050, and will be live streamed on their website, stpatrickmchenry.org/masses. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

We will dearly miss our friend Ray. Whenever we gather in Naples for music his absence will be noted. His continuing joy was always present even as he suffered. He appreciated all of us but most of all his beloved Cathy. Cathy was his rock, his complete caretaker and the love of his life. Her devotion was unmatched and my admiration for her has grown through the years. Rest well Ray. You will be missed.
