Obituary for Raymond R. McElroy, Sr.
It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of our father, Raymond R. McElroy Sr, who passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born December 26, 1937, to Gerald Sr. and Lillian McElroy.
Ray was a proud and dedicated public servant. He began his career in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff for Summit County in the 1960s before being appointed as the first Police Chief of Copley Township in 1966. His commitment to his community and his passion for protecting others left a lasting mark, and he was respected by his peers and admired by those who knew him.
In addition to his career in law enforcement, Ray was a man of many interests. He was an accomplished builder of homes and businesses and shared that love with his sons. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting and made trips to Canada with his parents and family to fish for the huge Walleye and made trips to their family property in Southern Ohio to deer hunt with his sons. He cherished his pets over the years, including fur babies Patsy, Booby, and Bella, who brought him much joy. A lover of travel, Ray found happiness in spending time in Naples, Florida, where he enjoyed many delightful meals at his favorite restaurants.
Ray's family was his greatest pride and joy. He is survived by his children, son Raymond Jr.& Maggie McElroy of Green, daughter Cindy & Jeff Morlock of Bowling Green, son Mark & Pamela McElroy of Uniontown, and son Scott & Sue McElroy of Batavia. He was a proud grandfather to Nathan, Chelsey, Sara, Megan M, Devin, Elizabeth, Preston, Shannon, Paul, Rachel, Samantha, and Megan R, and he is blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren. Ray is also survived by his sister and best friend, Betty Jane McElroy of Barberton, who was his loving caregiver for the past 3 years.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Sr. and Lillian McElroy, and his brother, Gerald McElroy Jr.
Though our hearts are heavy with his loss, Ray’s legacy will live on in the memories he created with each of us. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love will forever be cherished.
Dad, we will carry you in our hearts every day. You are deeply missed, and we love you more than words can express.
A private family service and cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ray’s memory to the Copley Police Department or a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace, Dad. You are forever loved.
