Raymond S. Smith, 94, of West Windsor, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at home. He was born in South River, NJ, and graduated from South River High School. He lived in West Windsor for the past 55 years.
Ray enlisted in the State Police as a proud member of his graduating class and retired from service at the rank of Detective Sergeant First Class. He was the recipient of the New Jersey State Police Distinguished Service Medal as a result of his actions in a lifesaving incident. Prior to his service in the state police, he served 5 years in the Navy and obtained the rank of Boatswain Mate Petty Officer 2nd class, in the amphibious force, and received the Korean Combat Ribbon with 2 battle stars.
Ray loved his family and was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He looked forward to celebrating family holidays, vacationing together, and visiting places of historic interest. He made everyone laugh with his humor and interesting stories. He was also skilled at many trades and showed incredible patience and enthusiasm in his work. He was never too busy to talk or help anyone in need.
Ray was a member of Peddie Golf Course and enjoyed playing competitively, winning many trophies and made several holes in one. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends, playing cards, and watching sporting events. Recently, he looked forward to weekly chess games.
He was predeceased by his parents Ella and William R. Smith and his brother Ronald Smith.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Connie (Grott) Smith, his son Raymond T. Smith and wife Robin, his daughter Colleen Smith and husband James Grossnickle; and grandchildren; Morgan Katherine, Christian, and Colin; his brother Robert Smith and wife Mary Ann Smith, and his sister Dorothy Halasz, sister-in- law Andrea Smith, and many nieces and nephews.
Ray was a member of St. David the King Church in West Windsor. As per his wishes, a private Christian mass was held. Interment followed at General William C. Doyle Veteran's Cemetery, where he received Navy Honors.
Donations can be made to the New Jersey State Police FTA, Hightstown VFW, or Hightstown Elks, to which Raymond was a lifetime member.
